That was my thinking as well. If DMC3 replaced the novel, then how does Nico even exist in the first place?

Also, of all the things to bring over from the novel...you chose a relative of Nell? o_O

@Lain A relative of Nell when there wasn't even the remote suggestion that Nell HAD surviving relatives, at that. The most she had was a portrait of a little boy who "looked an awful lot like Tony" and she hallucinated that boy "coming back" to her as she was dying. It's a terrible look for Nell to have had a kid AND a grandkid this whole time and Dante never mention ANY of them when Nell was like a mom to him.

@Ash We're not sure, but they keep bringing back novel elements for this game. The demonic tree was in the novel, "Redgrave" City is a reference to the alias, and the "mysterious figure" we all know is Vergil is reminiscent of Gilver. DMC3 and the novel can't fit without a bunch of gymnastics to reconcile Vergil and Gilver, or when was it that Dante had amnesia and lived as Tony, or when he "made his own handguns".

The only thing worse is a retcon that Gilver "already existed" in the series. Gilver killed Nell, killed Grue, killed a woman and framed Dante for her "suicide", forced Dante to mercy-kill Jessica, and turned everyone else Dante knew into demons. If the novel took place before 3, we wouldn't have DMC3 Dante as a guy who "didn't give a damn". He'd give ALL the damns. And he wouldn't be teaming up with Vergil either.

But back to Nico. Not only is she the granddaughter of Nell, but her pride over her work is reminiscent of "her father, who was a mad scientist". The only mad scientist we know of is Agnus. *Unless* there's another mad scientist we don't know, either Nell's son was Agnus in some unholy plot twist, or she had a daughter with such bad taste that "Big Buff Prof. Hojo" seemed like a good catch to her.

It's better late than never and I'm curious if there any mentions of the other spinoffs. The second light novel introduced a device called the beast's head which allowed Dante to cross into other dimensions/timelines. That's easy crossover fuel (cough Bayonetta cough).

Honestly I'm not fond of Nico and rather use an older Patty or Kyrie in her place. But her being Nell's granddaughter is not a bad idea, just super deep cut. I'm wondering if Grue makes an appearance?

@Z218 I'd rather have had never. 15 years is too long to not acknowledge something. Doing so now is hollow, an attempt to seem clever and soften people up. Capcom's more like the family member that never calls you up unless they want money.

Also, Dante destroyed the Beastheads at the end of the second novel.

And Grue can't make an appearance, he killed himself with a grenade to take out Gilver.

To be honest the only other time that they could have referenced was the anime. The one and done nature of the episodes would have allowed them to slide those events without much fuss. Although the manga and reboot would have been good as well.
