Sonic Fans tend to do that. The insufferable elitism that divides that fanbase almost warded me off the games, but I just play and ignore them. I've been able to enjoy so many of the series' entries they hate by ignoring their shrieks of the "franchise having lost its way since the Genesis days."

Stop hating on the haters that I can't admit are worth hating already.

I actually applaud your stance on not playing it out of principle. Stick to that. But if you change your mind... well, I can't blame you if you break down and try out Mania just out of curiousity.
