Ugh, don't even insult Episode 4 & 5 by putting it in the same category as The Farce Awakens. TFA only WISHES it had the originality, creativity, execution and character of ANY of the previous six films. TFA wants to be an OG Trilogy movie...it wants it SOOO bad. But what Abrams fails to realize...just as he did with Star TREK...that fans pay to see NEW things in their favorite universe, not the same crap done WORSE.

And you aren't alone in this sudden realization of TFA's quality from later rewatches, either. Back during the release hype & buzz, you couldn't say one unkind thing about this movie without being shouted down. But now, once people start rewatching the film, its flaws begin to seep into view upon repeated viewings, till you see just how much it's rotting from the inside...kind of like all of Abram's movies.

And that was something I always felt was iffy about the film. That and, my god you were right about Rey. She really IS a huge mary Sue in this. I really wanted Finn to be the main protagonist of this film, lightsaber and all, so I was disappointed when it turned out Rey was the lead. I think what made me not see her flaws was the huge feminist backing she had.

I'm for feminism, but Rey came off more as a character who was too "destined to be great" and everything was just sort of given to her. She could fly a ship, she could use the force, she was a better lightsaber user. Meanwhile I would've preferred Finn who was a storm trooper turned jedi rogue while learning the ways of the force and becoming a jedi himself.

Honestly, the most interesting characters were Oscar Issac's character, Finn, Han, Chewy, Leila, and that ONE storm Trooper that everyone really liked.

RIGHT??? I remember being one of eight human beings back on premiere criticizing Rey's stiff, uninspired, ludicrously-OP presence in the film, and I was shouted down as being "sexist" and "misogynist", with major voices accusing fans like me of being "unable to handle a female character who's strong in the Force." And that vile level of condescension alerted me to a very awful truth:

NONE of these people are actual Star Wars fans. Know why? Because powerful female Force-users ALREADY existed in Star Wars for YEARS. Jaina Solo, Bastilla Shan, Ashoka Tano, Darth Traya, and yes--my favorite EU character, the Emperor's assassin herself--MARA JADE. And do you want to know what the difference between them and Rey is? They're WELL-WRITTEN, and they're FLAWED.

Rey isn't sickening because she's lacking in man-parts, she's insufferable in the same way Tauriel was ungodly in those Hobbit movies: she represents a ham-fisted, poorly-written attempt at "GURL POWER" while simultaneously bending the series' mythos and perfecting everything in ways other female characters never did.
WolfOD64

Jaina and Mara went through several trials as characters, had to WORK for their power, and above all...they were FLAWED. Feminism's got nothing to do with it...it's about quality in storytelling and fleshing out characters, and by handing Rey all of her powers in five minutes, the ****-poor writers have managed to destroy BOTH. I could buy everything: flying the ship, fluency in alien speak...

...but literally picking up advanced Force techniques and pitch-perfect lightsaber combat prowess with absolutely NO prior training at all? That's My Immortal levels of Mary-Sueness. And honestly, giving the Force prowess to Finn wouldn't have been much better, considering the "Stormtrooper-turned-Rogue-Jedi" has already been done before...in the form of Kyle Katarn.

You're absolutely right about all of this. I still haven't seen Rogue one yet but I heard it was actually better then the Force Awakens. Is that true?

SIGH. I'll always be butthurt about Disney axing the EU just to steal story elements from it, and R1 certainly reeks of that...but having said that, I'll be the first to say that it's a FAR better effort than TFA. The film certainly suffers from pacing and story issues (all of which can be attributed to Disney's forced reshoots) but even with those hindrances, it's far more original and entertaining.

Characters are flat and I wouldn't trade any of them for the stellar cast if Rebels (watch that if you want the ONLY good SW story being told under Disney's reign), and the story is so basic and one-dimensional it feels like an episode of Power Rangers, but there are original planets, ships, troop designs and motifs introduced, as well as INFINITELY-better shot action sequences that really take advantage of...
