I gather they've only watched the series prior to that, heard it has more action. Not that the movie is that great anyway, from what I read the movie is definitely Hollywood production, don't know what else to say without revealing spoilers.

For the life of me, I can't understand why Gits movie flopped. If Zack Snyder can get good money out of controversial, visually appealing, overly philosophical flicks, why can't the team behind Gits do the same?

I gather despite agressive marketing, Gits just isn't appealing enough to modern generations. The franchise as a whole has only really been popular among anime fans, and even then it peaked before most of target audience was even born, and from the stories of those that went to see it apparently people were bored and would probably not recommend it to their friends.
