They are promoting herd mentality? A review might give one a general thought what to expect, but the choice to see it and like it or not is consumers alone, yet people treat critics as ultimate guides.
I don't think it's just that. It's caring far too much about what someone else has to say. Yeah, one could argue that you have to take other people's points into consideration. However, most seem to make misinformed judgements based on other's opinions.
It's the False Consensus Effect. People like reviews that agree with them and rail against reviews that disagree with their views. Every critic and their mother will tell you the Star Wars prequels were an abomination, but I liked them just as much as the originals.
There is too much psychology involved to explain this, I gather the burden of choice and responsibility has become so great for current generations, they welcome at least some of it being lifted off.
