Is it me or is the Devil May Cry franchise anti-Christian?

The DMC protagonist Nero is named after the real historical figure Nero who was notorious for persecuting and committing a massacre against Christians in the ancient Roman empire.

Nah, DMC had a initial inspiration by The Divine Comedy and It was evolving taking different elements from different cultures.

DMC4 has a Christian' s major influence but the name Nero isn't by the emperor but a black blanket that he has when was a baby front of the door of the orphanage.

I don't think Japanese developers think very hard about these kinds of things, they typically take iconography that looks cool but rarely understand the true implications/historical-religious context behind them enough to be making statements about the religions themselves. Shin Megami Tensei and the slew of censored religious icons in NES/SNES games from their famicom counterparts are two good examples to point at.

Not just Japanese developers, lots of developers prioritize the rule of cool over anything else. Nero is a cool name, and DMC is all about style.

I wandered in here because I met someone who had played the game and I am yet to buy it. The games focuses by its storyline alone on demons and "coursing blood". Now as long as it not cursing blood you may be fine. Love and Light.

Old post but this discussion is a bit personal for me because I was convinced for years that it was

I played DMC for years, then once I converted, I left Devil May Cry for what I thought would be forever, but two years later, I did a study, and it turns out the angels and demons in the DMC world are absolutely nothing like how they actually are. The Japanese have always had a weird perception of how angels and demons actually work. Quite unrealistic. I will say there are parts of the franchise I really don't like, but I play for the gameplay and nothing else, so I don't let it concern me much.

There's a Catholic saint who's named Lucifer, so don't get too hung up on names. The Japanese are just edgy to dorky degrees. Christianity does exist in the Devil May Cry universe, but it's never insulted.

In Sonic 2, there was going to be a level called Genocide City. It was cut from the game, but the music is used on the 2 player version of Casino Night Zone
The meaning of the word in Japan doesn't hold the same meaning that it does in the rest of the world (or maybe the west in general).

As for it being anti-Christian... I don't see it. But I think I can see where you're coming from, as I know I've thought about it before.

Although I'm not looking forward to explaining my obsessive love of a fictional half demon on the day of my judgement.
