for a thread to be declared officially dead, in most cases, it has to be left untouched for about 2 months. Even if all you can post is "more coming soon" then that's enough to keep it alive

And they won't die if they are kept alive by the initial author...if you are away for a set length of time and cannot contribute then obviously that's a different matter but if it's something you are able to access on a regular basis then the onus will be on you to keep it going - after all, people here don't often comment on fics, as you know...
