You see,the series starts from Megaman X1 - Megaman X8.Plus the RPG game that I told you earlier.So there 9 games.Here are the games are recommended to buy.

Megaman X Collection - Contains the series from the first one to the sixth.PS2 game.

Megaman X Command Mission - RPG game of Megaman X.

But if you want to play the red robot,Zero,play Megaman X4,Megaman X5,Megaman X6,andMegaman X Command Mission.

Megaman X7 and Megaman X8 are for PS2 as well,but I don;t think you like them much,as the games are in 3D,but it looks bad.
