Yeah, they had major time gaps in between. I remember that we'd have Machina reactivated in the third game, years after the main character of the first game died, and she goes insane. Then the main character of the third game brings her to her senses and it goes from there. I don't think we had anything solid after that.

Machina was the core of a mechanical planet with an earthen shell. The main character's sister was kidnapped by a cult trying to revive the planet. The main character went to stop them from killing his sister, but it was too late and she was killed, activating Machina. Along the line the main character's best friend becomes corrupted by power and Machina also falls in love with the main character, I believe. The first emotion she'd ever felt.
