uhhhhh no lol its one of the reasons i love the lock on makes it great seeing the enemies health much cooler then a lil red bar over their heads lol

I knew it from DMC3.

Did they actually explain it ingame? does seem like something you'd easily miss.
I did like how dante and nero had different lockon displays.
