I found an article that had an interview with tamtam and it explains why they made dante part angel

http://www.siliconera.com/2012/06/08/why-dmc-devil-may-crys-dante-is-part-angel/

Unlike the old Dante, who was part demon and part human, DmC Devil May Cry’s Dante is half-angel and half-demon. This is reflected in the game’s combat, too, where you can switch between demon and angel forms, each with their own moves. So, why did Ninja Theory include the half-angel part?

I asked Ninja Theory’s Creative Director, Tameem Antoniades, this very question at E3. Antoniades told me that Capcom had rules about which parts of the Devil May Cry canon Ninja Theory could change in their reboot.

For their part, Ninja Theory wanted Dante to be something special, like nobody else on Earth—almost like a secret weapon against the demons. Because the world is run by demons who throw their weight around, Dante being an angel makes him special.

At some point in DmC Devil May Cry, Dante is recruited by an organization of freedom fighters called “The Order,” who are attempting to free the world from demon occupation. The Order assigns one of their members, Kat, to be Dante’s guide and aid him on his mission against the demons.

Because, obviously, being a Human/Demon half- breed doesn't make you special enough.

Half humans are a pretty commo archetype, at this point they are all over the place, In terms of production he is a bit more unique because there isn't anything human about him exept his appearence.

In terms of story it was never that Dante was fathered by a demon that made him special but rather who that demon was. Dante is special because his father is Sparda and he is even more so because he has met and surpased his father's lagacy.

I thnk that it really is a game mechanics reason more than plot. I think they derived the plot from that concept rather than that aspect of the game from the story. What I'm saying is that they decided to make him half angel first and then they wrote the story around that.

That's what I always assumed as well. Making him half- Angel doesn't really much to the plot considering what we know of it, it rather just seems more like a gimmick.

It's a major part of the game mechanics, it's not a gimick because it's so central, more of a side effect.
considering that ninja theory are known for story, i kinda doubt they just made dante half angel to fit a "gimmick".
Most video games are developed by creating all elements first and then weebing the story based on what you have. NT is provably better at making stories based on what they have but that's the standard way of making games.

well every human has a bit of both (angel/demon) in them.....so if you ask me its the same....except he can use it for hes own power...while hes human side doesnt do anything but make him weak...:P:D

I also think they wanted it to be different from something the old games ripped off (Oh, I'm sorry... got inspired) from Inuyasha. The half demon/half human thing is so tired and overused.

it would surprise me. i mean they are trying so hard to keep the story secretive, so it would really throw me off if the game doesn't expand on this dante being half angel.

I would rather them not focus on it, really.

That's why I'm calling it a gimmick. The Sonic The Hedgehog series does the same thing with almost everyone of their games. They have to add some special feature to their gameplay to give the game some sort of boost even though the core aspects of the gameplay itself are enough. I especially hate it when, if I were to take away those special features, it doesn't do anything that changes the game. And stuff like this where it is necessitated by gameplay kind of makes me feel that it is forced into being part of the game rather than it being a natural part of the universe.

Personally, I don't like NT's idea of Angels from what I'm hearing of it. I see Angels with a sort of heroism, I think of them as beings of righteousness and justice so, when I see something that perverses that image, I kind of get disgusted and turn away. That almost prevented me from playing Bayonetta but, when I saw the Angels in there, I felt a little more comfortable with it because, really, they were far from actual Angels. However, NT made it a point that Angels aren't moral beings in this game, so I just feel really uncomfortable with the thought that the Angel would kill somebody or have intercourse with someone just because he/she could.

With that said, I would rather believe that Dante's being half- Angel is a gimmick than it being a central part of his character and the game's story because, otherwise, I wouldn't really be able to enjoy the story with that being a discomfort. I would hope that Angels in this game have as much to do with DmC's universe as they did in past DMC games.

Will a picture of Dante flirting with some Angels do?
well that doesn't really help....i know what picture you're talking about, it's just an art piece done by the creative director, or someone involved in creative. That doesn't really indicate the angels are going to be immoral beings.

i can't give you a link, but i can back up railazel by saying that tameem did say that angels are not specifically good in this game.

It doesn't really matter whether half human/half demon is overused.Yes, i do agree it was used many times in novels, games, animes ETC.But i guess you guys do know that no game is completely original.Hell, even the almighty god of war that was supposed to be the best hack n' slash for stereotypic gamers was inspired by Rygar,Castlevania and devil may cry.The all-so overrated call of duty that many people think that invented guns in videogames was inspired by medal of honor. And the cycle goes on and on and on and on.But did anyone really cares whether this games are inspired or rip-offed from other games? Non.

My point is, it depends to the writing to used the overused theme to become special.I'm not completely disagree with the concept of half angel/half demon so don't misunderstand me.

Edit: I have never watched inuyasha. Is that anime really so nuked worthy that many games was inspired by it?
