Soul Reaver to get Reboot?

Wow, it really is a fashion this year.

Soul Reaver reboot coming from Crystal Dynamics?

Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics are working on a new Legacy Of Kain game, according to new rumours, with plans for a possible E3 unveiling.

According to new rumours Californian studio Crystal Dynamics are set to make a return to the Legacy Of Kain series, with blog VG247 suggesting that a reboot of Soul Reaver is already underway and may be gearing up for an unveiling at E3 in June.
There's very little other information than that though, with the new game described only as a 'full reworking' and sporting 'a new art direction'.

Although the original news story describes it as a reboot of Soul Reaver specifically the series as a whole is known as The Legacy Of Kain. The first entry was Blood Omen from 1996, which was a top down action adventure for the PS one and PC. Although published by Crystal Dynamics it was actually made by Too Human developer Silicon Knights.

The two Soul Reaver games that followed are the best known in the series though and took the form of third person adventures that, ironically given Crystal Dynamics' day job at the moment, drew much from Tomb Raider. They featured a much more involved storyline though and one which fans still debate today.

Soul Reaver also switched protagonists, from the amoral Kain to the slightly less amoral Raziel. Uncharted writer Amy Hennig created the plot and characters for Soul Reaver, but since she's now firmly ensconced at Naughty Dog we assume she wouldn't be coming back for this reboot - if it exists.

With nothing else to go on we couldn't say how likely all this is to be true, but Crystal Dynamics has previously said they will announce a 'new intellectual property' this year.

Legacy Of Kain is not a new IP so there are four obvious possibilities here: the rumour is wrong, Crystal Dynamics are working on three games (which would be a lot for any studio), the new IP has been cancelled/delayed, or they've subcontracted the reboot to another company.

It may be we'll have to wait until June to find out which it is.

I did get excited... But now I really can't see this game happening in any shape or form.

If it happens im sure many fans will be happy if it keeps the things that made the originals so good. However there are lots of factors to consider first so I guess people will just have to keep their fingers crossed.

I would love to see this happen. I loved the Legacy of Kain series, Kain being my favourite character. Defiance had such an awesome storyplot ending, but it was sad to how it just ended there.

Soulreaver. Help me a bit with this. Does that mean that only Raz's story will be rebooted, leaving Kain's previous story (before meeting Raz) as it was?

Haven't played the games - even though I really wanted to. So I'm not sure how good/bad this is.

Kept you waiting, huh?

I believe so, the games directly involving Kain's past are the Blood Omen games, the first of which taking place before Soul Reaver, so Kain's origins remain unchanged.

However, whether this reboot actually is a complete reboot in the vein of the DMC reboot, or if it's literally just going to be a straight remake has yet to be seen, though if it is a complete reboot, chances are, everything will be changed given Kain's heavy involvement in all the games.

Hopefully Kain won't end up sparkling if the changes are too radical. And I suppose that'd be good enough. However I was absolutely in love with Raz's appearance. If they change it a lot, it might even annoy me, and I'm not even qualified to be a fan, having only played a demo with him.

Man, I'm really starting to despise the word "reboot". . .

I <3 SR, but why reboot it? Why not try a new arc with a new character in Nosgoth? Are developers too scared to do this any more?

I must admit, i'd love to see an SR remake just to see how the 'evolved' brethren would look in today's graphics (I found it pretty terrifying being chased by Melchiah). But reboot? It just seems a bit durastic for a series that saw a potential sequel in development 6+ years ago. Why not just carry on with the cancelled game?

I don't think they can continue on the story from Defiance. It was pretty much an ended chapter. So a reboot would be a good way to give it a new and fresh breath.

They could carry the story on.
Bear with me... *takes deep breath*
Kain goes after Janos who is possessed by the Hylden, Raziel is stuggling to break free from the Reaver, Some other bits happen... Kain Faces Janos... Possessed Janos is vanquished, Kain Kills normal Janos, something happens, Raz breaks free from the reaver, Kills kain...balance is returned and Raziel rests in peace... Happy ending for everyone until a mysterious and evil laughter is heard at the end which is the either the echo of kain or moebius... meaning there will always be an evil shadow that hangs over the land
(yeah i've had a few years to think about it)

Nice theories and ideas, but it would go against the Defiance ending. Why would Raziel wish to break free from the Reaver and kill Kain? It is pretty clear in the ending that they both understand their connection to eachother, that Raziel is meant to be the soul of the Reaver and Kain is the one to wield it.

fair point, but that is how i would like to see it end.

Me being a Kain fan, I wouldn't want that. The Defiance ending did pretty well with both characters. Why does it always have to end with one killing the other and then happy days ever after? I would rather have the two teamed up against the rest of the world.
