Breakdown of the Deluxe Edition contents...

For today’s DMC5 blog, we have a very special guest from the dev team in Japan! Capcom Unity folks, meet Matt Walker. Take it away Matt!

---

Hello friends! This is Matt Walker, producer on Devil May Cry 5.

It’s an honor to be featured here on Capcom Unity, so first up I want to say thanks for tuning in, and more than anything – thank you so much to all of the fans for all your enthusiasm and positivity! Seriously, it’s what keeps us going and putting in that extra ounce of effort here on the dev side.

Getting to the topic at hand - we’ve had a lot of requests from fans recently to go into more detail on the Deluxe Edition of DMC5, so we wanted to take the opportunity to do that – starting with the extra weapons.

When we started designing the game, the senior producer, Okabe-san, was adamant that the whole DMC5 campaign be available without the need to purchase anything outside of the standard edition of the game, so when it came time to plan a deluxe version of the game, we were very careful to make sure that anything extra would literally be that – fun extras that hopefully the hardcore fans would appreciate.

That means none of the extra weapons should feel like they are “the best” weapon to have, but should offer something fun that might interest the hardcore players. With that being said – let’s get into the nitty gritty of these weapons!

First up we have Gerbera GP01. This is a version of Gerbera that features alternate coloring to pay tribute to its designer, Shoji Kawamori (famous for his design work on the Gundam GP01 and Macross Valkyrie). From a functional perspective, it features one alternate move compared to your standard Gerbera – when you use this Devil Breaker and keep the control stick neutral, Nero will perform “Jocky” and dart upward (from the ground) or downward (from the air), rather than sticking his hand out to face palm any enemies or projectiles that might be right up on him.

OG Gerbera

Next is the Pasta Breaker. Nico fashioned this together using spare parts from other Devil Breakers and various kitchen utensils in order to help Nero twirl up that dinner of his. Since it was never intended to be used in battle, it’s not going to do much damage to enemies. Every time you use it, however, the remaining Devil Breakers in your inventory will cycle one spot. This means that it’s the only weapon that allows you to switch it up for the next Devil Breaker- should you choose. Because it’s not particularly effective in battle, however, you’ll want to think long and hard about whether you’d prefer to use up a spot in your DB inventory before taking the plunge.

Pasta Breaker – it may not pack a punch…

… But it WILL let you cycle your next Devil Breaker.

Sweet Surrender is more of a passive Devil Breaker. As long as Nero has this equipped he’s not going to be able to attack demons with it at all, but you can use it to slowly regenerate some health. If you’re really in a pinch, you can use Sweet Surrender’s Break Age ability to regenerate a bigger chunk of health. Either way, as long as you have Sweet Surrender equipped you’ll have to focus on racking up those sweet combos with Blue Rose and Red Queen.

Sweet Surrender – fun fact: in Japanese the onomatopoeia for the sound massagers make is “weeen weeen”

Cavaliere R is a version of Cavaliere that Nico has tuned up and painted specifically for Dante. From a functionality perspective, it adds one new move, but Dante is more susceptible to being broken out of his attacks when compared to the OG Cavaliere. Sure, you have one more move at your disposal – but you’ll have to think about whether that tradeoff in losing the super armor is really worth it!

Finally, we have the Mega Buster! It’s the Mega Buster. It goes pew pew pew. Really, if you don’t know what I’m saying just watch this video cause man I love this video:

That wraps it up for the extra weapons. Hopefully we’ve answered the biggest questions everyone has about them. As I mentioned earlier, the intent was to balance them so that there’s no such thing as the “best” Devil Breaker or version of a weapon – just that the extra weapons should provide something fun the hardcore fans can dig into should they choose to.

One last time I just want to thank everyone for all your passion and positivity. Hopefully we’ll be able to continue to share info with you directly over Capcom Unity, and we’ll always be available over all our various social media channels, so please continue reach out whenever you’d like!

---

Thanks for the breakdown, Matt! I was sold at the sweet added vertical mobility of the Gerbera GP01, but really good to get the deets on all the specifics of each item.

The Devil May Cry 5 Deluxe Edition is available for pre-order right now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and will be released on March 8, 2019.

It sounds like the Pasta Breaker is essentially for "shuffling the deck," as it were. It sounds weird, gonna need hands-on to totally understand how it works.

The NYCC panel.

@Ronin
Dude. No personal posts. It's in the thread title.

EDIT:
Ops, didn't realize the panel was already posted above. I saw it on YouTube and linked it in a rush. My bad.

If the time stamp works (otherwise at 1:15:00), this shows off the Continue system. Gold Orbs work as they normally have, but you can also spend Red Orbs to continue, purchasing different levels of health for higher prices - and of course, in true DMC fashion, those prices will increase with each purchase. The highest tier will revive you fully and fill your magic meter, and also damage surrounding enemies. Can't quite see how much damage it does though, since their stream camera was in the way of the boss' health bar.

Gotta say, I do really like this concept, because it gives you a secondary option if you've run out of Gorbs, or didn't remember to stock up at a statue. Considering that you can buy continues in advance with Gorbs, being able to get the same effect, but at a marked up price in the moment seems okay. They really seem to be finding interesting QoL ways to address DMC4's massive Red Orb influx.

Of course, none of this will matter to a true pro, now will it~

Man I wish I still continued learning French. All I got is that Devil May Cry is not God of War and some other stuff but its to disjointed to fully make out.

Anyone here know French!?

Conlige suspectos semper habitos.

Interview from NYCC. Not too much in new stuff but confirmation that while DMC5 takes place after 2, it draws more from 4. Also a Mega Buster trailer.

So, not a whip chain but a three section staff. Those are called sanjiegun. You can see them featured in a few martial arts films. Most recent of which I can think of is Fearless with Jet Li.
The theme of the weapon, then, continues to be the three sections, they just alternate form and position.

So, someone translated the DMC4 novel. I posted it on the DMC4 section but from what I've seen it's not very active so I'll post a link to that thread here, too, for those who want to know more.

The events there do have a direct correlation to the events in 5 so it's not as though it's completely irrelevant. A lot of them are directly referenced in game.
