I Was Wrong...

When I initially heard of a news that the new/next Devil May Cry game was going to be a reboot of the series I was worried. REALLY worried. Then I saw the first trailers and got even more worried. Why was Capcom doing this? Why were they turning the reigns of this great series over to Team Ninja? Why were they ruining one of my all-time favorite game series and characters?

I'd made up my mind to stay true to the original series because there was just no way DmC: Devil May Cry was going to be any good. I wasn't going to support this mistake.

I was wrong. I downloaded the demo a while back and was hooked. Big time hooked. Although this was a different Dante this one was still a crazy badass to the highest degree. Now, I'll always be a super huge fan of the original series and the original Dante. But this new version is blazing his own path in my personal list of favorite game characters. The style is top notch. The game play is amazing. The graphics and scenery is second to none....And the storyline....great storyline.

I've only had the game a very short time. And due to family obligations I don't have tons of time to play. But even with my tight schedule, I'm already over halfway done with the game. I just cannot put the game down when I have time to play it. It's that good.

It has it's quirks. Sometimes the camera gets a little lost. And it's a bit difficult at times to target a specific enemy. And I'm not one who likes having to do a lot of backtracking to get items or bonuses. But even with all that said, the game ROX. Although I'm a big fan of the Ninja Gaiden series, I had serious doubts that Team Ninja would do Dante and Devil May Cry justice. But I was wrong. They did. I know I'm just one opinion, but IMO, they hit a home run with this one.

Congratulations Capcom and Team Ninja!

Even though I'm still playing through this one, I anxiously await the next chapter in the series and the continued development of this great character.

Edit: Made the mistake of confusing Ninja Theory with Team Ninja. Apologies. So:

Congratulations Capcom and Ninja Theory on a great game!

Hee, the same happened to me, actually. At first I was rejecting DmC because it looked so different from the original, and only because of that. But once I finally decided to give it a try, I fell in love with the game. This taught me a lesson: don't be afraid of change in itself, don't judge it negatively just because it is change, but embrace it with an open mind. Judge later.

I think I've said this before, but when I saw the 2010 trailer, I was not happy at all. I wondered what was going on and why they killed Dante.
But after I saw Dante flies through the air naked with pizza trailer, I started to like the game and thought it still has the roots of a DMC. Actually playing it, I really like it and hope that there will be another game.

Um, no, Team Ninja did gameplay development and some cinema rendering, Other M's Director Sakamoto is hell bent on ruining Metroid, to the point he threatened to throw TN off the game project if they tried anything he didn't specifiy in teh control scheme and design...any suggestion that would have increase gameplayability was told "do it my way, or you're fired.

Again, please know whom to direct the blame on.

As a huge fan of Metroid and Samus herself, you can see why I really didn't enjoy Other M. I don't know too much of the specifics but when I heard Team Ninja was on board making the game I just couldn't for the life of me figure out why.

You're getting the people who created Beach Volleyball and the DOA series full of sexualized women with breast that defy gravity to not only make a Metroid game but actually make the first Metroid game where Samus isn't just a silent protagonist? Those guys sure understand women.......was this a sober decision?

Except they did NOT head the project, they did gameplay and engine work, Nintendos in house boy, Sakamot9o, ran teh whole show and is the one who made Samus a total 180 from how fans have been given reason to percieve her for 25 years. TN's gameplay work was really good for the painful restrictions Sakamoto placed on them; wiimote only, no nunchuck, included pixel hunts, impliment an AUTHORIZED ITEM CONTROL SYSTEM. All those were Sakamoto's decisions, not Team Ninja.

You know what really bugged me about Other M and the people wanting to argue about Samus's characterization. It was how people said "well Samus was a blank slate." No, she wasn't.

Samus is someone who has a profession in bounty hunting. A very dangerous profession. She's proved countless times she is able to topple over large scale criminal bases all by herself. Even a sensitive side was revealed when seeing her interaction with a baby Metroid. She's also shown respect to her fellow fallen bounty hunters. This speaks volumes of the character without uttering a word.

I hated how they took her and turned her in to the women who was basically just submissive to this guy. What the hell?!

I kind of didn't need to rant about this. Sorry about that.

Oh, no, no need to apologize, I agree completely. Samus was originaly the Nintendo incarnation of Ellen Ripley until Sakamoto decided to strip away everything that the fans had a legit reason to view her as, and say "oh, well, all teh fans view Samus in a certain way, and it's not who Samus is at all." ~_~

Its a lot like how people try to say Link is "a blank slate do you just insert yourself". he's not, he has definable characteristics and personality traits...or at least common character traits and personalities bnetween various characters that carry the name...

Exactly. So many people were acting like just because she was silent she didn't have a personality. It really irked me.

If Link was some frail weakling who couldn't do anything for himself then that would be doing an injustice to the character because we know Link suits up as the most badass Peter Pan ever and saves the world.

I completely agree about Samus and "no voice, no personality" issue. Her actions speaks volumes of her personality.

She is a cool and collected bounty hunter that stops at nothing to complete her mission for the safety of the galaxy.

~nods nods~ And she had a vioce prior to Other M as well; Jennifer "Fem!Shepard" Hale actually recorded full diologue in Metroid Prime as a prologue that got dropped. It's like Link though; just because we don't hear her voice most times doen't mean she doesn't talk at all. especially when people react to her as if she said something.

I'm sorry, that was uncalled for.

Although you have to admit, he did start out that way.

In any case, I'm not mad about Samus. I'm not even mad about the new Spider-Man even though I don't like him.

I just view New Samus as a mistake in the way she was presented, and will wait for the next game to represent her in a better light.

By the way, have you seen Moviebob's"Heavens to Metroid" and "HtM: One Year Later" videos? Let's not forget "Extra Credits" Other M vid.

I played and finished Metroid 1 and 3. I started Prime and Echoes, but never finished them. I honestly don't really care about the character as much as I do the actual atmospheric experience that I go through while playing them.

And having said that, I was never that big of a fan of the games in the first place. I just found them kind of enjoyable once or twice.

Also, I like other Metroidvania games better. SotN is still my all time favorite.

On a side note: I heard that the lady who does the voice for Samus in Prime is Bayonetta as well.

Imagine Samus stripping off all her arm -- oh.

zerosuit_samus.jpg

Ok, now I'm mad. I know it's part of her official lore, but you'd think a woman who wears armor (even lightweight techno-armor) would be a little more muscular and a little less porno.

Edit:

Well, the Bayonetta thing turned out to be true. I just hope they don't objectify Samus any more than they already have.

Ah, them wacky Japanese and their tentacle porn.

Edit: Just checked, Jennifer Hale was NOT in bayonetta...wonder were that one came from. Liam O'brian, the VA of Sanctus, was in Bayo as Baldar, butu tha's the most cross game I know of off the top of my head
