They have discontinued Studio Sculpey polymer clay over phthalate issues. -__- I'm not bothered about the phthalates... they are only realistically a danger if you consume the clay by eating it, mixing unwashed clay utensils with stuff you cook with, or burn it when baking. There are so many things that contain phthalates in people's homes already (most plastics) it makes the issue kind of pointless. But we always need endless streams of new EU legislation to keep us busy don't we.

They're getting rid of Sculpey? So what are people supposed to use instead? It's one of the most recommended polymer clays for beginners if nothing else - what's the alternative? Hell, they may as well get rid of most art and craft materials while they're at it considering anything that isn't from Early Learning Centre most likely contains something vaguely dangerous if you eat it, drink it, wear it, set fire to it, marry it...
Current rant: Statutory rights. Learn them. Repeat them to yourself. And then be prepared to come up with some rather good legal precedent as to why I cannot claim under them because your store policy does NOT supersede the law. Nice try though...

I am not sure about the basic "Sculpey" brand for general use or for polymer clay beginners... I can still see that around, but the one that is definitely off the shelves is the "Studio Sculpey" range. This one:
What we have instead, apparently, is the new "Sculpey III" brand or "Sculpey Premo" which apparently contains much less plasticizers than Studio Sculpey. I don't hear anything about those being discontinued, fortunately, because Kato and Cernit are not the easiest clays to get here in the UK, and I can't stand FIMO. That leaves me having to try this Sculpey III product because there are no others with the wide range of colours and wide availability like Studio Sculpey used to have. But they are sold in smaller packets than Studio too, so I suppose it'll work out more expensive anyway.
I'll have to ask other sculptors I know about ordinary "Sculpey" brand and whether that is being discontinued as well, although I have not tried that one myself because I hear it's not the best quality compared to Sculpey FIRM, Studio, Premo or III. I have always avoided it because if am making things to sell I figure I should use the more professional and stronger materials. But still, if it was that would leave a lot of people in the lurch who use it, or run classes, etc.

I would have thought the recent boom in interest for making BJDs and the like would have meant more clays becoming available in Europe if not specifically the UK. Why can they not just slap a warning on the side to cover their backsides and then carry on selling Studio? Make it age-specific to buy or whatever? But like you say, the EU need something to do...can't have them suddenly becoming useful now, can we?

I guess the very squishy nature of the Studio Sculpey meant there were a lot of plasticizer in it, and it crossed the EU law threshold for it. You know what that lot are like, we pay tons of money so they can make up stupid rules like banning vegetables that don't have the correct straightness. ¬_¬
I don't actually know of many BJD makers in the UK. If you want air drying BJD doll clay you can't get it easily here (not that I know of anyway) unless you manage to get from a dollmaker's overstock/destash here, or buy it on eBay from abroad. I buy mine from Japan or the U.S.A. because on they have it readily available from what I can see... although if anyone finds some in regular stock in the UK please let me know.
The type I use is called La Doll.

Cernit is German-made I think... and it's available here but you do have to hunt about for the right colours. If you want black or white Cernit rather than some flesh tone, that's pot luck as to finding any at any one time. I'm after large blocks of Cernit black right now and I can't see any about that isn't tiny packets of it. I went hunting for Kato earlier too, I found some in the end, but the site look so old I am not sure I should order from it...

Paediatrician reckons is definitely ASD...still have two weeks of assessments and months of home visits to get through before a definite diagnosis by the entire multidisciplinary board. Got work this weekend and have to take Jake on a 400 mile trip which should be interesting...no sleep, no proper meals, I have no time to compile the data required for this meeting and now my computer is acting up big time. I swear if Jessica has stuck that stupid Trojan on my machine too, I'm going to murder her slowly with a teaspoon...
...Josh has a really bad eye infection, Jessica has a really bad attitude and all I want is two minutes to myself to get my stuff done. I need to get data, make a report, analyze the website fully and then write up the contracts for seven staff members so that they are legally watertight. I'm getting 4 hours of sleep a night, I've got Jake with me non-stop without a break and I'm so tired of all this. So very very tired. Autism or not, he's hard work.

Okay I just need to say something.
I find it really annoying that people who have been on this site for awhile still can't figure out that I have a sarcastic sense of humor and instead of asking if I was being serious or not would rather insult me over a joke thread and then cause it to get locked before I have a chance to respond. All of this making me look like an a**hole. Thanks.
Oh, but who really cares. I wasn't on the forums for a few days because I was with my friends in Washington, D.C. We attended a feminist conference. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. I think the best part was that I was with people who aren't so quick to judge me and make me feel like a bitch. Something that happens regularly on this site.
On an unrelated note: To anyone who thinks feminism/feminists aren't needed: You're welcome. Because without us you, women especially, wouldn't have a lot of the rights you have today. But why thank us? It's not like we're fighting for you or anything. No, you can continue to think we're a bunch of man-haters on our periods and not needed at all. After all, you are so much smarter than me.

Perhaps folks were messing with you in that thread in a playful manner. Not all of them, but most. I've dealt with a lot of sarcastic people in my life time and no matter how you slice it, sarcastic folks are hard to deal with. Just tell folks what you mean and ditch the mask in front of the face.
Honest opinion here: Feminism is weird. It is nothing but Bit@hing and complaining. Nothing changes, people don't change so just get used to it. You do nothing but make yourself's look like angry, bitter house wifes. Because at the end of the day both a man and a woman have TO WORK TOGETHER TO ACCOMPLISH a goal. Such is life.
