What I think should have happened with Vergil

When I was playing the game towards the end I was trying to predict how Vergil and Dante would end up fighting. When Vergil was swallowed by Mundus, I was really hoping Dante would free him only for his brother to be under Mundus' control. It could have been Dante against Nelo Angelo. I think that would have made for a much better final boss fight. But just my opinion.

That sounds like it could have been really good, or if when mundus was destroyed, mundus sort of haunted vergil, vergil would suddenly become nelo angelo during the end boss battle and once that happened there is no going back

No, I never liked Vergil being a puppet for Mundus in the original game. It would be a mistake to tread that water again.
I wholeheartedly agree with this, Vergil hates Mundus for killing his mother and imprisoning his father, there is no reason for him to team up with Mundus or have Mundus manipulate Vergil.

I don't know, I kinda liked that in the original series.

It made Vergil's character more "tragic" in that regard, the only thing I would have changed about that was Vergil eventually regaining his humanity and helping Dante during the final battle with Mundus in a way to redeem himself from his evil deeds he did under Mundus.

I liked the original series too, but not that aspect of it.

oh yea, I get why some fans may not like it, to see Vergil imprisoned under the control of someone like Mundus would obviously not set well with others, but I'm just one of those guys who likes tragic characters, especially if they can some how in the end find a way to redeem themselves or find salvation in the end.

That was the only thing I would have liked to seen from Nelo Angelo before he met his apparent end.

I hope he retrieves his memory with Kat. As the spoiler indicates, he seems to concern kat's opinion on him most.

And Then some a barely censored V and K sexy time, leading to the sequel, DmC2, where Kat has a wham line. "Dante, I'm pregnant with Vergil's child."

The wise strategist erased both his and Kat's memories of making out so he could remain an emotionless dick.

I would have liked it if Vergil took the power of the Hell Gate for himself and ascended to godhood, leaving Dante to solo Mundas and then throwing down with Vergil in a final battle where he isn't a complete pushover. The hero pushed beyond the boundaries of his physical and emotional limits, fighting a marathon of impossible battles against unbeatable enemies, and finally coming forth the victor after giving his all, too exhausted to even move.

You know, something exciting.

Vergil seeks power; it's his defining character motive and flaw. He finds a God and in his pride seeks to defeat him, but is overcome and enslaved in turn. It's pretty much classic mythological hubris.

Horgh.

Bleh, I don't want that cornball crap in my games. It was fine the first time around, but I would rather see them do something different.

Oh yes, Hubris, one of the oldest and most potent of all themes and morals in the history of human expression, is "cornball" now. Paradise Lost is teh lamezorz, amirite?

It's a question of execution. I wouldn't want Vergil to become a mute enforcer again either, but it's the whole point of his character arc to seek greatness and be struck down. What would you prefer, that it turns out Pride is A-OK, that everyone who spites you is in the wrong for questioning you as well as a smelly uglyface, and that secretly you are the most powerful unlikeable prick in the world?

...who am I kidding, that's the moral of DmC...

Paradise Lost is a fantastic piece of literature, but it's hundreds of years old and touching upon those same themes in 2013 is cornball. If you want epic poetry feel free to reread it or even check out the Odyssey. I don't care for that particular sentimental flavor in a video game. Obviously that's just my opinion, you aren't required to agree.

My point is I want Vergil to be master of his own destiny and not someones b*tch. I have no problem seeing him fail or suffer because of his hubris. From my point of view the old series just wasted him as a character. Granted they didn't know he was going to be so likeable and badass until 3 was created.

That could have been cool but to me would have felt even more forced than the Vergil fight already was. I think they want to build up to Nelo Angelo. Also Nelo Angelo exist because of the repercussions of Vergil's lust for greater power and at that point in the game he had yet to develop that character trait.

I think he needs to truly hit bottom and turn to his real dark side and his lust for power and at this point, revenge and despair in order to sell his transformation as Nelo Angelo. It would be awesome if DmC2 had Nelo Angelo as a true villain and not a mindless puppet.

I have no issue with that.

I know that Chief but the truth is that the human condition hasn't significantly changed since Milton, or even the first cave drawing explored the notion of Hubris. We're the same obnoxious, atavistic animals we were back then and until we get some transhumanist redesign up in this hizzy we're going to stay that way. People still want and still need to realise the folly of baseless ambition without philosophy, and through fiction we can explore it. Last time I checked the economy crashed because people are greedy morons...oh wait! It's because of the Demons! Humans aren't responsible for their own actions! Bogeymen hiding under the stock exchange did it! YAY!

Yeah, they say that Kamiya originally wanted Vergil to just be a kid who was kidnapped and brainwashed when they were making DMC1. It wasn't until the first novel and 3 when the devs decided to make him into a calculating badass whose thirst for power ultimately destroyed him.

I wouldn't say they wasted him. 3 gives us the logical end to his story, but prequels could have further explored what made him give up on people and let us learn the why he craves power so. I'm happy not to know of course; your own suppositions on a character's motives can be just as interesting as finding them out for certain, if not moreso. It's just tragic that DMC4 was such a misstep, because it could have reintroduced Vergil or his legacy in a more interesting way than him just being a power-up for a dude who could be his son/successor/former golf caddy.
