Hideki Kamiya, director of Okami and Devil May Cry, calls PlayStation All-Stars a "rip-off"

Kamiya, honest as ever, doesn't hold back in his free-form Q&A over Twitter

Hideki Kamiya, creative designer and project director for Capcom, Clover, Sega and now Nintendo, has been answering hundreds of questions over Twitter today. The Japanese legend known for his work with Devil May Cry, Okami, Resident Evil, and more is known for his straight forwardness and honesty. It should come as no surprise then, that when asked about his thoughts on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Kamiya called the title a "rip-off" multiple times, even stating the developers behind it "throw morals away."
Later, Kamiya faced direct confrontation over his statements on PlayStation All-Stars. Here are the three tweets that followed Kamiya's "rip-off" statement:
"And throw morals away. Great. RT @Jumbadabum Fans asked for a PS Smash. Listening to fans + following a successful series sounds good."
"You are you and I am me. That's all. RT @Jumbadabum Trying to please fans = amoral? :("
"To try to please fans, you can do EVERYTHING. Great theory. Totaly against mine."
Naturally, from there the questions began to get out of hand. Accusations of Bayonetta being a rip-off of God of War, and his new project Project P-100 being compared to Pikmin. As is Kamiya's style he took everything in stride, pronounced his opinions to be solely his own, and that if you weren't happy with them that was okay.
It's also worth noting that Kamiya mention later he is just learning English, perhaps insinuating he may not know the direct translations of the language he used. We wouldn't expect him take back what said, however, considering how proud of an individual he is.
Kamiya is currently developing Project P-100 for the Nintendo Wii U, an action title which uses touchscreen commands to create different weapons combinations. As usual, it's unbelievably unique -- and was my personal favorite Wii U title at E3.

I'd really like to see Hideki Kamiya do a review of DmC once it comes out, Kamiya really seems devoted to the series he created, and to see his opinions on the full fledged gameplay and everything else in the reboot, would be nice.

Who knows, maybe he'll love it, maybe he'll hate it, maybe he will be in between.

I respect Kamiya and love his atttitude! This guy likes to smack talk and burst other people's party balloon! But who cares anyway? Everyone copies each other's ideas nowadays, nothing is totally original! I think it will be a good game experience and I'm looking forward to it!

Kamiya has stated that he no longer cares for the DMC franchise. To him DMC2 was what DmC is to many and has long since stoped carring about it.

Lol

Why is he so childish? Quit trying to knock people's hard work and put Anarchy Reigns out in NA like you said you would.

I think he's salty Bayonetta won't be getting a sequel and that she isn't in the game! Lmao Taking it out on everyone else. Lol

I respect Kamiya so much, mostly because of his director's commentary videos for Bayonetta.
He sits down, has a drink, and plays through the game while talking about cool stuff.

That said, I don't really agree with him on all fronts. Ah well.

To Kamiya, may respect be given, but if you don't know English yet, don't voice your opinions in English. People can take what you say in the wrong way.

With that said, I don't think he's saying that PS All- Stars was "amoral," just that it doesn't have any values, and he might as well be right. Games like All- Stars are only meant for money and publicity, just to make characters that are already famous more well- known and get money from their fame.

Well first of all, he didn't make AR and second it's Sega who is not releasing it, not P*.

I'd be salty if that happened to me with every work I make.

So this guy has no control over anything? Why is he mentioned? He doesn't do anything. :/

Because he made a few of the most famous games in the last decade. He's very creative. When you think of something, he takes that thought and it turns it into a fantastical mess of awesome. So saying that he doesn't do anything is like saying that Isaac Newton didn't create Calculus.

However, he's nothing more than a game designer. He makes the games, but marketing's out of his control. He has to place the publication of his work to some big company in order for his work to be known. However, most decisions made by eastern companies these days kind of suck.

I'm sorry, you said creative...

Now what exactly are you talking about?

Well, the series he's created... isn't exactly that creative...
DMC......when it first came out.........hmmmm....not so much.......Okami(he did make Okami right?).....yes in gameplay and execution...but kinda no in concept and being an unique idea since its pretty much followed the concept of Shinto mythology....its pretty much the Eastern version of God of War...that is if God of War came first..Viewtiful Joe....yes you can say so.....I guess...Bayonetta....a witch that kills angel.....yes very yes but in terms of gameplay its just another DMC and even used.

All the games he made were all original in terms of concept and design(maybe not DMC) but in terms of gameplay they all were very similar or alike...its like he can only make one type of game(although Okami stood out from most of them) but creativity.....hell yes....the concept is creative and even the gameplay appears he tries to come up with creative ideas(maybe not DMC or Bayonetta and definitely not VJ) but Okami is rather creative...I guess....does creativity include originality?

I'm talking about just DMC, one of the most unoriginal games ever in terms of story and design.
............yeah it is....but his other works were very original...you can't make a statement about one guy and his works through only one of his many works.

You said the series he created...isn't that created....well DMC isn't the only series he made.

Yet again sometimes creativity isn't enough to make a good game...its all about execution(something Kamiya does well) and even a creative and original game can still suck very badly......like lets say MindJack(original and creative concept but very terrible if not the most sh*tty game of this generation).

Creativity does not equate to originality. By far, I don't think the man is original, but he is creative. Very creative. DMC 1 was very creative in almost every aspect ranging from its artistic to gameplay value, but it wasn't original.

Almost every game nowadays tend be creative....well a lot of Western developers not so much but at least NT stand out as creative from a lot of Western game creators but games like Gunslinger, Comic Jumper, God of War, Prototype, Assassin's Creed.....hell yes.

DmC doesn't strike me as being very creative story- wise. The game definitely shines in design though.

Maybe its you but oddly I wasn't really referring to DmC I was more like referring to NT's past works like Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, and mostly Kung-Foo Fighters for the Xbox.

Even if DmC isn't that creative in your eyes it definitely stands out from a lot of Western IPs.
