If always wanted to see a sythe as a weapon in DMC, I know we got one in the reboot but the weapons in the reboot don't interests me all too much since they lack the strongly implied mythologies that the weapons in the main sereis do

Sparda sword turns into a scythe, so does Nevan, although hers is short.

As for what I'd want... Besides bare fists, i don't know. Bombs were something Lucia used, and I think Lady in DMC4SE, not really the best weapon unless you happen to have a bunch of slow-moving enemies huddled up in front.
Spear sounds kinda impractical and the only thing it can do can already be done with Rebellion.
I guess axe would be cool. I'd say whip too, although Nero already has his special arm for similar action.

If Sengoku Basara has taught me anything, it's that everything can be used as weapon if you try hard enough.

I would like some variety from past games. That's really all I want.

I could see Dante mimicking Kratos like he mimicked Bruce Lee with Cerberus.

I wonder if Dante would grunt super loud like Kratos does?

I think he has the potential to. Remember his grunt when he does his Stinger-like move with Beowulf in DMC3? "Rrrrrrrrragh!"

I would like to see Osiris & Arbiter make a return in the old games.

While Nero uses his devil bringer, Dante can use the whip new Dante used.

Judging by how they have a trend of weapons. You'll get a lot of weapons that function the same, but you'll continue to get the same old weapons. DMC is the Metroid of action games when it comes to weapons.

DmC was taking it in the right direction with the grappling, scythe, arbiter, and those ninja stars.
DMC 4 introduced us to roses/daggers (a glamorized version of Vergil's daggers) and the best weapon to come out of it that was original was Pandora's Box.

    I'm hoping for crossover weapons/costume.

The thing is that DMC never had that big a budget other Capcom brands get. So they have to reuse some assets when it comes to weapons. And they can be pretty inconsistent in that department. You can have them adding original weapons to the recurrent ones (DMC3), you can have them almost completely recycling classic weapons (DMC4), or you can have them making weapons that are new when it comes to how they look but are actually their way to bring back old moves and concepts (DmC). Although Capcom didn't make DmC, but the point stands.

It all comes down to how seriously they would approach development of a new game, and how many resources they would pour into it. That said, since the thread is about which weapons we want, I personally would like now staple ones like Rebellion and gauntlets to stay, and second the idea of chain-attached blades and a whip.

In other words, they lack creativity and can't come up with new ways of fighting. It has nothing to do with budget. You either cut the old weapons or you don't. DMC 3 brought Agni and Rudra including Cerberus also gave us environmental combos. DMC 2 brought us Uzis and Lucia, acrobatics, and a few other things I can't remember.

Whatever happened after that is complete and utter laziness.

It's hard not to think that Capcom isn't lazy, cause they are, and that's especially true when it comes to the weapons department in DMC4, but "new ways of fighting" ain't the words I'd use. Cause that doesn't only involve weapons, but mostly changes about how the mechanics work. Like the environemental effects in DMC3 that you mentioned, or how they changed Devil Trigger in DMC4 to make it work as a cancel and even launcher in the case of Nero, etc. Don't mix weapons and combat system. They're tied, but not the same thing.

To an extent, of course it does. Sketching, modeling, texturing and making moves animations for new weapons ain't exactly free. It's all work they have to pay developers for.

The combat system is based around those tired weapons. They always, always always start with Rebellion combos and then move it forward from there. They look at what worked before and apply it, limiting other creative weapons from seeing the light of day because now they're stuck trying to choose between gauntlets or something new, but the something new may not work with the old. So they say F it.

Ninja theory wasn't having it. DmC has to be the one that has the newest close range weapons. I believe the only things reminiscent to original DMC was Rebellion, Gauntlets, and Odachi (which was tweaked to be better).

The combat system is the mechanics that allow the combos, not the combos themselves. You base the moves and their properties they have to have, and therefore the weapons that will possess said moves, on the combat system, not the other way around.

I would add Osiris and Aquila as well.

The former's forward move was pretty much Nero's Streak, its power-up was kinda like Exceed, except it's not activated by you but it's a passive ability, and of course its Prop Shedder is... well, the old Prop Shedder.

Aquila had a good amount of original moves but its main gimmick was of course pretty much the old Round Trip. It's even called the same, if I remember correctly.

Oh, and the angel and demon whips are of course Nero's Snatch.

I'd say the only two weapons that didn't have any of the old moves in their moveset were Arbiter and Kablooey, if memory serves me right (I feel people overlook Kablooey a bit too much btw), and in general, rather than Dante, I'd look at Vergil in that game if I was to talk about original moves.

    EDIT:
Which one is Odachi? I don't remember any DmC weapon named Odachi.

Oh the Odachi is Vergil's sword Yamato. I haven't been deep into Devil May Cry lately and I'm losing touch, even though I've been spotty with Special Edition.

Yeah the weapons do have some special treats for us fans. The usage for them are not the same as what Nero was limited to. Kablooey is amazing, I watched Sam D's video and I just couldn't believe how cool it was. I used it, but I was just trying to get my Osiris combos down.

If they can't give us new move sets then I'd really like a new protagonist who fights more wildly than Dante.

If Vergil came back alive next game and becomes one of the protagonists, what weapons do you picture him using?

Maybe he'll use a staff even Aquila stars.

I want him to be able to grab and use his summoned swords. A wrist blade. Teleportation Titan-like gauntlets. I'd settle with him just having styles that alter the way he uses Yamato.
