after playing Vergil's downfall, i was wondering how Vergil would get some sort of revenge over Dante. any theories?

Demon army raised + Searching for his father to achieve even more power, while his good half vainly tries to regain control.

Hmmmm.....what power??? If Sparda had power that was useful to Vergil he would've been broke out of the prison.....Vergil as far as I'm concerned is possibly stronger than his old man. He'll probably find where his father is and have him set free (since he is now Hell's new ruler.....maybe???) and have him join his side to conquer mankind but Sparda would refuse like Dante and not allow his son turn into Mundus and blah blah blah Stars Wars moment.....Dante must now stop his corrupted brother. We all know where this is heading.

DMC3 2.0 here we come.

would that mean sparda would die at his son's hand. during one of the encounters, in order to protect dante, sparda sacrifices himself?

I didn't say that but I say die to trying to reason with Vergil and then Vergil snaps thinking Sparda was just like Eva, that he too favored Dante over him, they fight and Vergil slays his father.

oh. that sounds way cooler than what my stupid brain put together

Cool topic.Here goes......................................

Vergil starts going from city to city looking for people who would bow and worship him.....all others are killed either by him or his generals he hand picks. Dante tries to stop the invasion/takeover, but finds himself too far outnumbered.

Vergil than goes and finds Kat and takes her life. Dante, has now lost everything. His brother. His love. and a large population of the world that he couldn't save.

Vergil wishes to break Dante's spirit and turn him back to his side. Though he carried much anger towards Dante and his betrayal, he viewd Kat as the reason. with her gone he hopes for Dante's return.

With his new found control, comes the threat of new enemies. ANGELS. He begins to raise up his army. Though Demons are in great number, they lack the combat abilities of the angels. To counter this he travels to Hell in search of the Fallen Angels to join him, including Lucifer.

While there he frees his father from his torment. He informs Sparda of his plans and asks for him to join him in bringing back Dante, saying that with the three of them united, the Angels won't stand a chance. Sparda turns his son down and tries to talk Vergil out of his plans. Vergil sheds a tear, and swiftly stabs Sparda in the chest. He is to weak and beaten from years of torture to fight back. Vergil catches Sparda's limp body and lays him to rest, and quietly walks away.

I'd see Vergil trying to free Sparda, for different reasons:
1. to show that he has become so powerful that he can destroy everything Mundus has done in the past,
2. to show that he is stronger than Dante, and a better son (since he tried to free his father and Dante didn't)
3. because he wants Sparda to join him and the army of demons he is putting together.
Finally, once he has done all this, he plans to take revenge on Dante.
So he starts collecting information about Sparda's whereabaouts, and finds out his father is kept prisoner in the prison of Temen-ni-Gru (yes, the rebooted version), which is not a tower, but a enormous pit that forms a mountain too (just like Dante Alighieri's Inferno). He travels through the circles of this hell (much like Alighieri's, again, but with modernized versions of the sinners), and frees Sparda, without telling him at first his ultimate purpose (taking revenge on Dante). He tells him once the get out of Temen-ni-Gru, and Sparda tries to dissuade him. They almost fight, but they are stopped by phineas, who finds them and tells them that the angels have come down on Earth and have started enslaving mankind.
With some difficulty, Sparda and Phineas convince Vergil to collaborate with Dante once more in fighting the angels.

his plan? well, his ultimate desire was power. absolute power.
he did gains power over the demons, its time to take on the humans. by force, this time.
we'll probably going to hear the quote "Why did you refuse to gain power?". and also epic brother fights.

this is pretty cool idea for a solo vergil game or a solo vergil story mode.

You could have a dmc2 with both dante and vergil playable from the start, telling the same story from two different angles.

That was exactly my original idea. Dante's part, I imagined, could describe how human society collapsed into a situation similar to a zombie apocalypse with demons, with an atmosphere similar to a survival/horror game (but with obviously maintaining the gameplay we all recognize as typical of the series).
The two parts would have a common ending, where the twins confront each other and their father.
I even thought that Phineas could play the role of a mysterious guide to both Vergil and Dante, appearing and disappearing at will in crucial moments of the plot (his objective being that of making the two last nephilims finally collaborating to defend mankind against its new enemy, the angels).
