Ok, what I think is that when Vergil fell into the "Demon Realm" after his fight with Dante, he challenged Mundus. Scince Vergil was so tired and wounded, he was weak (seeing as how Vergil sent Dante to the floor with a single stab in their first fight, but earlier he was shot in the head and acted as if nothing happened) and lost to Mundus. Mundus knew about Vergil's fight with Dante, and knew he was much more powerful. He feared Vergil's power, but at the same time he felt the saddistic urge to control it and Vergil.

Sometime after he turned Vergil into Nelo, Vergil started regaining his powers and fighting the Mind Control. So Mundus created the armor he wears to restrain his power. That's why Nelo is so much more powerful when he removes his helmet in DMC1. Seeing Dante and the Amulet made him remember who he was, and his anger towards Dante helped him get Mundus out of his mind once and for all so he could settle the score with his brother. Afterwards, Mundus was ****ed off at Vergil for failing him, and killed him like he did Griffon. But Vergil's soul couldn't be destroyed because of the powerful emotions he had running through him, and as a last resort he nested himself inside a host body to recover and eventally use: Nero.

Whaddya think?

I could get behind that theory. Vergil may very well be possessing Nero's arm for whatever reason, but the idea of Mundus killing Vergil bothers me... which makes the theory more plausible.

Why? Mundus easily got rid of Griffon, why couldn't he do the same trick with Vergil?

Nelo Angelo was too cool to kill off!!! err, ahem, sorry. If Mundus could so easily kill someone who was Dante's equal, then why did he send Phantom, Nelo Angelo, Griffon, and Nightmare after him? Mundus' presence was seemingly apparant throught the entire island, so it would had made sense to annihilate Dante the second he showed up.

What would had been the difference between shooting Dante with those red energy spikes during the fight with Griffon instead of waiting until he got to the statue room? Y'know, aside from the story?

That's a good point... he can kill his henchmen easily but not you... Maybe Mundus just wanted to toy with Dante, or he's mentally retarded and didn't get the idea to kill Dante?

like someone else posted, he can kill his servants but not you. it makes sence, because mundus was powerful enough to control his servants, so he was most likely powerful enough to control their souls. if he can control the soul, then he can dispose of it aswell
