Story Element Compilation

For those of us who haven't seen it yet, DmC's story isn't all that new. Not to insult it in anyway, but the story seems cliche' in general (not noting any of the smaller details). The whole "hidden-force-controlling-modern-society" thing has been done multiple times. For a quick referrence here are some themes/motifs that are common to this genre:

Allegory Of The Cave

Subliminal Messaging

Behavioral Psychology

Exploitation Colonialism

And here are some movies:

The Matrix

They Live

V for Vendetta

Inception

1984

And some shows:

Grimm

Young Justice

Feel free to add on to the list, including with books, video games, etc.

Yeah, but DMC's story isn't that unique to beggin with, never was. So, while I see your point and get what your saying, it's not that big a shocker. I do dissagree with some of your sources, though. I think it more a matter of shared elements more that the implication that these are in fact the places where they got the ideas from. For example, rather than saying, for example, that the idea of of the magic spray paint came from a Constantine comic (just an example), you would say that both the game and the comic did it and they provably both got the idea from the same source.

PS, you forgot Inception.

This is pointless. We barely know the story, so it seems dumb to start picking on it and comparing it.

Actually, inception had a huge "influence" on the game not directly the story.
Yeah,i know everybody knows this lol

I think the point should not be if the story is original or not. Just look at the references posted here, if it borrows from those places, it will be already much deeper than, say, 99% of games' stories in general.

While DmC is taking inspiration from Inception, Matrix, 1984 and even Plato, Uncharted takes it's inspiration from Indiana Jones.

Even if it's not original at all, it will be one step up when you talk about story in games, and that being made with the ultimate gameplay-focused game just makes it even more awesome. Generally you either have a great combat gameplay or a great compelling narrative, even with previous Ninja Theory games the combat was pretty basic and flawed, while Ninja Gaiden has a ****ty ass story. This game is bringing the best of two worlds together, and that's the reason why I'm so hyped for it. Ninja Theory's narrative along with Capcom's gameplay? Can't imagine it being anything less than superb.

Same thing can be said about Dead Space and the movie "Aliens"

Heck, Dead Rising even gives credit to George A. Romero on the cover of the game

I dunno if the OP is just trying to find similarities in other media to compare DmC or are you trying to find exact influences from the people at NT and Capcom.

I think there are too many people involved in this game to simply point and say i know where thats from , This game has been inspired by not only DMC but whatever else people over at NT happen to read or watch or whatever they do on their free time. But when its all said and done, the game will have an original story and before you know it, another game is going to be inspired from DmC.

I guess its kinda fun pointing out things that are similar in our eyes that we happen to see in DmC with our experiences but it doesn't mean NT or Capcom was inspired from it at all.

Inception wasn't a movie completely about moving walls. Theres actually was a plot behind it. And DmC is basically the same way but with a different reason behind it.
They Live hehe (classic) yea satire was done very well in that movie, and i've yet to see anyone play around with it in movies or games since then.

The Matrix has so much going on in their movies and it was inspired by many other films that really any action film that comes out and has slow motion bullets is automatically compared to the matrix. The matrix, to me, is where a lot of games and movies aspire to be. Maybe not in the same exact way the matrix did but just have great cinematography and a twisting story with over the top action.

DmC is just like any other game when it comes to finding inspiration from other media. Assassins Creed is being sued because of how close their story was to this novel someone wrote before the first AC game. Granted the machine works just like the book said it would work, the difference is the characters, the story, the locations and basically everything except having a machine that can look back into your memories history.

Hopefully DmC will have some behind the scenes footage of the making of the game, and we can get a look at what some of the creators at NT were inspired by by making this game.

I dont get the young justice reference.

In Young Justice, Aliens take the place of world leaders.

Good points, for sure, but the point of me doing this is to find out what other forms of media had used the motifs DmC are using.

As for my opinion on the matter, I'm not saying that it "took" any of these elements, rather I'd prefer that it would use them in a less straightforward manner.

Well, I'm glad you're not saying DmC "steals" plot elements. I hate that argument.

Though I'm agreeing that they could have been less straightforward about their inspirations.

In this day and age, it is very hard to come up with something completely original. Almost all of it has been said and done, so we try to base good ideas off of other good idea. (Fun fact: World of Warcraft is a clone of Everquest, but somehow grew into the billion dollar emipre we know today...)

Originality doesn't come in the plot and comes in the plot's development. How the character's progress and the story evolves is what makes a story original. A really good story can make it so that you can't tell what its influences are.
