Forgive me if this seems deja vu-ish but has capcom/nt gone the right way in doing a reboot?

Not asking for your opinion on the reboot itself, just on the idea of doing a reboot.

Cant really answer that question since the game isnt out so we dont know if they did a good job or not. If they should have rebooted the series at all is a different matter. The majority of fans will most likely say it didnt need it. all it needed was a few minor changes here and there.

I don't think it really matters who does it to be honest. If the original dev (who are they, again?) was rebooting it people would have reacted just as harshly. It may not have been identical if NT hadn't been the one to do it, but it would have been in a similar direction. To making the game contemporary can only have so much wiggle room.

In some ways they shouldn't have but in some ways it was a better move.:'( DMC is great with gameplay but not so good with story. (DMC4 being an example):| NT is awesome with story and I guess Capcom liked Heavenly Sword as well. They really didn't need to change Dante's look at all. Dante's look was openly welcomed to DMC fans and the fanbase, but think of people who don't like anime, people who like hack n' slash but don't even buy DMC because, no hate, Dante looks like an anime styled, flamboyant, pretty boy. Capcom wanted more money from America so they decided to make Dante look "Tougher" in order for American fans who play saints row or other American made games to see DMC in a setting American gamers can relate to. Dante's look was to show that even DMC can get gangster too :D and Dante was given a more streets style make over, cause, let's face it, old Dante would never fit or look cool in a Ghetto setting like the new Dante can. (Then again I know the ghetto, and he would never fit in the way he's dressed) Gameplay is rather slow compared to DMC3 and DMC4 but so was DMC1 and people still play that game to this very day. The reason this game is on 30fps is to show that the world of DmC will change instantly, thus giving the story a different style and roughness.

So my thoughts on this; Capcom wanted more money from America, so they changed Dante to fit America. Fans didn't like it and ranted all over the Internet, but now that all these rants are around, other video game fans are noticing DmC and are actually liking it now that he looks more American and rougher. Americans like a scrapper looking guy. Then Capcom created DMC HD collection to get more money from Original fans to finish DmC, pay for the disc to be made, over seas transports, and air borne transport as well.

In short; Fans were just Capcoms puppets to use to make DmC more noticable, and now we're puppets again for falling for that HD collection crap.

Capcom wants to attract more western gamers with this game, so yes, in order to do that, the game needed to be rebooted.

This question is not logical, really, is it?At least not the way it's asked.

For the intent of pursuing the goal Capcom set out to reach in order to expand the genre and title in places it had not been, was Ninja theory was the best choice?

The question of whether or not a reboot of any kind was necessary is irrelevant. Had ninja theory's talents been wasted on what amounts to adding new rims and winged doors to an '88 Camary, the question would still be just as valid.

My answer, HELL YES!!! For the very reasons Ninja Theory was approached for this project. Don't tell me Sony Santa Monica is a better choice. The god of war performances were standard fare and the story was Micheal Bay machismo swaggering chauvinistic heartless angry man Roid -rage ****e!

Everyone, I just meant the decision to reboot the franchise in general, not the company they choose.

@cheeznasty- DMC1 was made by one of Capcom's internal teams run by Kamiya, Team Little devils.

@Dragonmaster- Well Dante was establish as a mercenary before he became a hunter in the original prequel to DMC1 so they could have played that up more. You dont become a mercenary by going to college so you could assume he was either a cop/soldier/criminal before coming that.

Plus they did miss the ball as people did think New Dante look more like a crackhead who they laughed at rather than a badass gangster like Jackie estacado.

So they could have just given him a less stupid looking wardrobe.

I guess for me, I think they should have been chosen to do a revamp rather than a reboot as it is a truer test of their storytelling skills than a reboot to me.

Anyone can reboot but it takes a true genius to revamp.

By nature, I understand the desire to not want to have to deal with the mess that the previous creators left behind but then NT should have stuck to doing New IPs because a reboot will always be brought up to the old canon and be compared and contrasted regardless.

DMC does have a built in fanbase that is sick and tired of the series being handle by creators who dont want to fix what came before. So the easiert way to appease them would be to do just that and fix up the canon, making it more cohesive.

Yeah well tell that to god of wars SALES , according to those sales , that is what the west likes.
not to mention gameplay wise god of war owns all of ninja theories games

If you weren't asking about Ninja Theory, then leave them out of the question. This is about the project, before NT was involved, from Capcom's perspective. Stop throwing the hired developer under the bus.

You can't Change the past, you can only create a new future. That's what they're doing.

Devil may cry was a grand expansion of the action genre. Gameplay came first story was an afterthought. Gameplay was advanced to a point that action games HAD to get better to compete. The result, we get better, more satisfying games. Now, we have the tools and ability to expand further upon the last generation in areas previously denied to us and all people seem to want is to move backwards. We have the tools at our disposal, This game will push the expectations of what we as gamers demand from creators further thus giving us a more rounded fulfilling experience.

You refer to the series as a 'mess' yet, you want it continued with a bit of hammer and nails to cover it up? You familiar with the phrase "You can't polish a turd?" Imagine James Cameron took over the Transformers films WHERE Micheal Bay left off instead of starting it over from the beginning? Imagine you had to build a skyscraper over a structure made of Popsicle sticks? Why would anyone want to give a great story teller anything but the full set proper tools and material in which to build a foundation to do the best job they could?

It's as if you took the best cuts of beef off the cow to make processed dog food and left a gourmet chef with nothing but the tough, tasteless gristle and bone to to invent a three course meal out of.

Capcom told Ninja Theory " Here are the pieces. We've built it once. You've seen it. It was alright. Now, let's take these pieces. Let's... DO something new with them." Ninja Theory put on their glasses took a close look smiled and said "Let's see what We can do." Now, we're seeing that, and there's so much more to show.

Oh, by the way, this is a revamp.

The idea of doing a reboot was a good idea but not the only best option avalible. Once Capcom decided to do something like this working with Ninja Theory became the best option. NT are experts at making action games with deep, well written stories but their gameplay is average. Devil May Cry has the best gameplay of any hack and slash series but the story while entertaining is disorganized and full of plot holes. This reboot expands on Devil May Cry's gameplay but gets to start with a well written planned story.

By your logic, DMC 3 should never have been made.

Everyone sucks until they do it right the first time.

Ninja theory has never Tried to match the game-play of a DMC. It was never their intention in past games. That's why the game-play is average. Even so, they have Capcom teaching them this time around and if the recent demonstrations are any proof, it has worked.

You familiar with the phrase "You can't polish a turd?" .

Excuse me,

But are you actually comparing Devil May Cry to a turd?

Anyway,

I think the right analogy that should have been used was a house that was damaged by vandals.

Sure the vandals (Capcom) messed up some stuff within the franchise but I think if they would have simply applied themselves to addressing those issues in the next 1 or 2 DMC games than they could have easily fixed it similar to how how a damaged house could be fixed.

The whole polishing a turd thing just seems to far off to me.

But thats just my opinion.

I don't think that Capcom should have rebooted the franchise (obviously) but if they had to do it I think they should have went to Platinum Games.

They are composed of many people who have worked on DMC including the original Director of the first DMC game Kamiya. I think that the blow would have been softened a lot if Capcom would have went to Platinum Games. But I think there still would be alot of fans who would think that it did not need a reboot. But having PG on it would have eased alot of initial fears IMO.

Kamiya already has a DMC it's called Bayonetta. Also, He could never create what Capcom wanted. His games have crap stories and crap writing. He was not the right choice no matter how much fans love him. Truth is, the combat in DMC 4 was the best of the series it needed variety gameplay wise. Yes, I'm comparing the acting and story in the past game to a turd. The same goes for Bayonetta. Capcom wants their product to rise in other areas and they don't want to do a repair job. "Fix it in one or two games." Are you insane! The problem is that while they're 'fixing' things they could be moving ahead and expanding. Beating a dead horse is not going to get it to move.

crap stories ? Despite ninja theories crap GAMEPLAY ! oh and btw mods and admins i just thought i would put this here for my alibi

From what I've seen, the new game-play looks like a grand improvement. Sooo, apparently NT is growing in other areas from which they'll only expand further. Imagine what their next game will be like. Capcom on the other hand... well, if any stuntmen or former Beetleborgs want to pretend to be real actors, they'll always be needed to stink up an already bad script.

Well if wanting Capcom to actually FIX their mistakes and continue the storyline and series I love instead of them taking the easy way out and hitting the "reboot button" is me "going in insane" than I guess I should be on the loonyben by now...

But seriously lighten up.

Its just my opinion on the matter.

And judging by have passionately you like to defend them its apparent that having this conversation with you would be pointless since It would go absolutely no where fast.

So lets just agree to disagree and move on shall we.

I'm not defending anything but logic. Regardless of who is working on this project the principles still remain the same.
