The Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged, says Square Enix

The bungled launch of massively multiplayer online game Final Fantasy XIV has damaged the whole of the Final Fantasy franchise according to Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada, although he's not giving up on the game yet.

'We'll continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the Final Fantasy XIV that should have been released,' said Wada. 'The Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged,' he admitted.
Wada made the comments at the recent Tokyo Game Show, but they've only just now been translated into English, by website Andriasang.
As Wada admits Final Fantasy XIV has been nothing short of a disaster since its launch on PC in September 2010, with reviewers and players complaining of restrictive quests, a terrible user interface and a broken economy. Everyone seemed to agree that the game was released far earlier than it should have been and was a considerable backwards step from Final Fantasy XI.

The game was supposed to have been released for the PlayStation 3 as well, but ever since the problems with the PC version became apparent that seems to have been put on the back burner, and there's still no release date either here or in Japan.
Dragon Quest X, which also features massively multiplayer online elements, was also brought up but Wada assured fans that not all future games would necessarily follow this same path. 'We're not making them all online,' he said. 'We'll continue with a variety of developments, online included.'
This may imply that the majority of Dragon Quest games will continue to be primarily offline experiences, perhaps following the same pattern as the numbered Final Fantasy games, where only XI and XIV have been massively multiplayer.

I can only hope that Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be awesome by the time both of it are released, because both games seems shaping to be great games. I am definitely not getting Final Fantasy XIV for PS3 in the future regardless it is better than the PC version or not.

lololol coulda predicted this....MMO's are BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD for the FF franchise....

You could have predicted that a game released a year ago would flop?

FFXI was by all means a decent MMO. FFXIV wasn't, I dunno why.

I think MMO's are BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD in general but that's just my opinion. An FF MMO isn't something I would like but FFXI looks pretty good for an FF MMO so like... it's all about how they do it.

Welcome to my world....
They think Final Fantasy XIV ruined the series? For me, it’s just been a steady decline since FFVI.

Still, I can’t see how that one game would damage the whole series. I’ve never been into MMO’s so I wouldn’t buy a Final Fantasy MMO in the first place. It’s not like the earlier games aren’t good and I am looking forward to the PSP game.
