MS has never really known what to do. They throw features at the wall and see what sticks, then keep using them ad nauseum even when they don't really work anymore.

    Regarding the Cancellation of Scalebound

We’re sorry to say that on January 9, 2017, Microsoft Studios announced the cancellation of Scalebound. We are very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were.

Going forward, we will strive to continue delivering high-quality games to you, starting with NieR: Automata in March, and including products like Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link and Lost Order in the future.

We will keep working hard to meet your expectations and we look forward to your continued support!

    President and CEO, Kenichi Sato

I haven't even heard of Lost Order or Granblue. Granblue looks really cool though, especially that giant dragon at the end. So badass. (And no that isn't my dragon bias talking. >_>)

And think about that for a moment: developers from a country known for people who pour their entire being into their work and are so insanely efficient, getting tired? The development had to have hit a brick wall for them to have such trouble with making the game playable, then adding on whatever odd demands Microsoft had placed on them couldn't have helped.

Terrible all around. I wonder if they had such trouble developing the game because the vision didn't align with the tech.

Well if not idiotic ideas like "hey only kids who are into mp are playing our console, so lets make coop". I bet it would make decent single player.

The sad irony of asking a developer of (mostly) quality single-player experiences to compromise on their talents to work on a platform that fosters no love for singe player experiences.

Like...why the hell would you ask them to do something if you don't agree with that they actually produce?

because xbox was going down in the flames in japan so they hopped platinum will pull them out of this. Now they are all but dead in japan and shoot themselves in the leg on top of it.

And that's the irony, getting a Japanese developer to do something Japanese on their console that's failing in Japan, and then making demands to change the product into something that's not really Japanese, nor appealing to them.

    *Pops neck*

If you think this is Platinum's fault, you need to look into MS's track record.

They do not want a game that is 6-10 hours long. They want a game that will keep people coming back hours on end. They want something like a Phantasy Star or a Final Fantasy online. This game was meant to be single player and MS kept adding things on. CO OP and open world. They probably wanted the game to be 60+ hours on campaign.

Why would they add this type of weight? Because Phantom Dust couldn't do it and Fable couldn't do it. The next IP they want has to have those things. They're looking for a system seller. What happened with the Phantom Dust devs was that MS kept adding on things like that and even released publicly (BEFORE telling Phantom Dust devs) that the game was going to be 60+ hours. They did not put anymore money behind the devs and the devs told them they can't do it with the amount given. So PHANTOM DUST GOT AXED.

Why launch Scorpio when nobody trusts in any games you announce? I think the entirety of announced games at E3's 2014 conference have been cancelled.

The only E3 2014 game that hasn't been officially canned now is Crackdown 3, and I'm waiting to see that one die in a fire too.

They can't get rid of Crackdown 3, that's a recognized franchise. They're probably pouring more into that than they were with Scalebound.

I wouldn't put it past them. The backlash upon hearing that you couldn't cause destruction in story mode was already enough to make them get quiet on anything else they might've put into it.

Wait. Wtf? Are you serious? What's the POINT of being a superhero if you can't cause destruction? We don't want that. Even Infamous had a lot of destruction.

Yes, exactly. But they said you could only cause destruction in multiplayer, even though the entire thing was a parody of the whole "cops save the city" thing and you could cause hellacious destruction in 1 and 2.

Sorry but I think you guys might have heard it wrong. What I know from watxhing all the crackdown videos is that in single player you do have destruction and its good but in multiplayer with the power of the cloud the destruction gets even more insane. Meaning each thing in the game can be destroyed down to the tiniest part. They even demonstrated with a video how destruction differs in singleplayer and multi side by side. They shot a wall and on single player you had your standard holes with grenades creating big chunks out of the wall when destroyed. In multiplayer with the power of the cloud the wall got destroyed to like tiny pieces with biger bullet holes. So singleplayer not having destruction is not true.

    Edit
Scratch that watched the ign video again and realised the comparison was between miltiplayer destruction without cloud and with cloud. Ok yeah thats kind of stupid that a game about destruction does not have the same level of destruction in singleplayer. But they didn't imply that single player wont have desruction at all. All they keep advertising is the power of the cloud, which by the way im sick of hearing everytime i see a crackdown video.

Yeah that was along the same sort of lines I was thinking, it seems to me that although Platinum had a huge vision for the game it simply wasnt running well (based on videos that were shown) & seemed to be having major technical issues even after the delay.

You cant keep trying to expand your vision for a product until the base game is running well enough. Publishers/investors cant just keep throwing money at developers to keep going & going otherwise the games become incredibly expensive. Its those sort of things that cause developers to end up having to fold due to financial situation 1 game or a series puts them in.

Seems it had reached a stage where it had gotten as expensive as Microsoft were comfortable with & they didnt think it was financially viable to continue funding it so plug was pulled. Cant see a company thats already being questioned for lack of new IP's & exclusives cancelling a new IP/exclusive by a Japanese developer after 4 years development & funding on a whim.

With games being shown earlier and earlier & the early access and alpha culture we have started to adopt its no surprise more games are being cancelled when it seems like they are compete. Its highly likely they arent as far into development or close to completion as it sometimes appear & are being shown still with many issues behind scenes to fix before release.

Games these days are being revealed far too soon & maybe they should start to hold off on that a little. Even games with no issue with funding like Star Citizen still go through development issues & still have to take longer and longer to develop to reach their vision but again you have to draw the line somewhere or things will never release. Even with the unforeseen issues that remain before it can finally release they still get slated by gamers for taking their tim fixing them.
