Saving system for DMC 4

I'm having a problem saving in this game. I just finished mission 7 and saved. Quit the game and went back to start again and found out I had to do 7 all over again. Can anyone tell me what to do so I don't have to do each mission again.

start the next mission, quit then save at the mission select screen
