Friendly Rivalry (Or Not)
“What do you mean I have to?” Dante yelled from the other room.
“I’m busy and Lady’s out of town.” Trish explained. “You have to pick up Nero from the dentist.”
“Why do I have to?” Dante moaned.
“Because someone needs to pick Nero up and you’re the only one available.” Trish rubbed her forehead, getting annoyed.
“He can walk home!” Dante sighed and leaned back in his chair. Trish walked over and dragged him out of his chair. Dante staggered over to the front door and left with a groan. He got in his car and slammed the door shut. He muttered to himself as he drove to the dentist. Nero was waiting outside for him. He was grinning broadly.
Nero hopped into the car and got in Dante’s face. “Hey Dante! Like my teeth?” He smiled wide, so Dante could see. They sparkled in the sunlight.
“Sure kid, whatever.” Dante waved him away.
“I bet my teeth are better than yours!” Nero prodded.
“Oh yeah? Wanna bet?”
“Sure! The usual?” Nero smirked.
“You got it.” Dante agreed and they shook hands. He got out of the car and strode into the building. Nero leaned back in his seat and put his hands behind his head as he waited. A half hour later Dante stomped out holding a goody back with a new toothbrush and floss inside as well as a card with steps to proper brushing written on it. He got into the car and sunk in his seat. “I’ve five cavities.” Dante mumbled and Nero cheered.
“I win! You owe me a pizza.” he laughed as he poked Dante in the shoulder.
“You know what?” Dante looked at him. “How about a double or nothing round?”
“I’m listening.”
“First to finish his strawberry Sunday has to pay for both AND buy the winner a pizza.”
Nero weighed the odds in his head. “You’re on!” They shook on it and Dante drove to the ice cream parlor. They burst in and waltzed up to the counter. They ordered and eyed one another. They were given their Sundays and spoons. Dante took a coin out of his pocket. “When this hits the ground.”
“Got it.”
Dante tossed the coin into the air. “Heads.” Nero called. “Winner gets three second head start.” Dante agreed and they watched the coin fall. It was heads. Nero grinned and started eating. Dante tapped his fingers impatiently for a few seconds before starting. Nero was already half way done. Dante’s eyes widened and he picked up the pace. He slammed his spoon down on the counter and rubbed his stomach.
“I win, kid. Good try.”
Nero gasped. “How….?”
Dante patted his back. “Don’t worry about it. You did good. I’ll be in the car.”

Later that day Dante was draped over the trashcan. “Oohh…oooohhh why’d I eat so fast?”
“You ok, Dante?” Nero came over and handed him some Pepto. Dante took it and thanked him. “Don’t worry. You still one, right?”
“Right.” Dante smiled. “You owe me a pizza.”
“Now?”
“Yeah.”
“….Are you sure?” Nero asked, genuinely concerned.
“Yeah.”
“Ok?” Nero left to get a pizza. He came back a little while later. Dante had migrated from the trashcan in the bathroom to the one by his desk. “Feel better?”
“Yeah. Is that my pizza?” Dante nodded to the box in Nero’s had.
“Yeah.” Nero put the box down in front of Dante. He was about to leave when he got an idea. “Hey, Dante.” Nero smirked. “How about a challenge? Whoever eats the most slices wins?”
“Deal.” Dante returned the smirk. Nero sat down and Dante flipped took of his coin. “Same rule as last time? Winner gets a three second head start?” Nero nodded and Dante flipped the coin in the air.
Trish was sitting on the couch shaking her head. “Men.”
