If it did, it'd take place with Samanosuke rebooted as a descendant of Akechi Mitsuhide in the modern world.

Onimusha can have feudal & modern Japan together. Like Samanosuke & Mitsuhide can be playable together.

Because brand recognition. Marketing twats claim sequels alienate newcomers, when it's just bad sequels which do that.

Why should they care about longtime fans? There are never going to be more longtime fans. Newcomers are an expanding market, and there are always more people to pull in. Longtimers just mire the IP in attention to detail and loyalty to creators who left the product ages ago. All they do is complain or leave the franchise.
