My theory on time slowing after the prisoner exchange.

The things I think of when I have a headache. This happened to pop into my head earlier and I'm surprised I didn't think of it before.

I'm sure you can all remember having to save Kat and Vergil several times in one mission and how it didn't seem right that Dante would be slowing time, or Mundus would give Dante a chance to save the people he cared about by slowing it for him. If you look at it from the point of view of the people that are slowing down, time hasn't changed. Instead, Dante is moving faster. In Dante's POV everyone has slowed down and he's still moving at normal speed.

My theory is that, because Dante is afraid for Kat and Vergil, he actually speeds up faster than normal. This is supported by the fact that it only happens when they are in danger. You can probably find stories about people who were able to accomplish amazing feats because a loved one was trapped. That's the same concept here. The wave you see is likely just to let you know it's coming.

If I remember right, such occurrences were explained as a burst of adrenaline which gave a person super-human strength. There's nothing that says Dante couldn't have had the same occurrence.

It's either that or Dante is immune to Mundus slowing time, which, when you think of how many times it happened, didn't make sense. I don't think Mundus would have tried so many times if he saw it didn't affect Dante the first time.

Anyway, that's my theory on it. You can share your own, agree, disagree. I just thought I'd share this since it was one of the main things that fans really questioned about the game.

That whole incident was already confusing as all hell and this theory just confuses me much more. If that was the case how come this didn't happen when the Order base was being destroyed and Kat was being dragged away and the many other times like when Vergil was getting dragged inside Mundus and stuff?

Also, enemies still spawned during the event and they moved at regular speed.

No matter how you look at it what happened makes no sense in the context of the story and the really only explanation is a deux ex machina where Mundus outburst caused a ripple in Limbo where random slow downs happened in the most convenient of times for Dante. Ergo Mundus f*cked up.........again.

Sounds awfully a lot like lazy/poor writing..

I assumed it was because Mundus released a large amount of power and for that small amount of time didn't control all of Limbo's power. Thus, Dante was able to manipulate time in Limbo for a short period of time without realizing it. During the raid on the Order, Mundus was still in control of Limbo, but during the trade he let his anger go nuts and let go some of the controls, leaving Dante to take the wheel of time in Limbo and use it to his advantage without realizing it.

The main thing I can think of with the Order base being attacked is he found out about it rather than actually being there. He had time to think and wasn't acting on instinct. It's the same with Kat. With the car he had to act on instinct. There wasn't time to think it over.

The enemies spawning. Demons are able to keep up with Dante most of the time. Since this isn't something that would be connected to his demonic powers, they'd probably be able to at this time too.

As I said, this is just a theory. I don't know what they were thinking when they wrote it. I just know that it has some connection with things that have happened in reality.

I don't see it as much different since when they were both attacked in both situation both situations happened at random especially the Trade and when they were being attacked at the base even if he knew about the situation beforehand the fact that Dante's adrenalin didn't kick in moments before the SWAT barged in and when Vergil was doing something on the computer that the game never explained yet.

But I see your point.

Regardless of what happened at the trade it will and always be the case of

I made a thread on it aaaages back on this theory too, that it was Dante's doing. He did have quicksilver in the original, so time slowing down isn't unheard of in the series. But it is known when you're in a dangerous situation your brain takes in more data, thus things feel like they're moving a little slower [same with gaining strength thing too, a teen once lifted the front of a car off his dad when he got trapped under it].

So drop that concept in a video game setting with a Nephilim that isn't human, it's possible Dante caused it and the scene is only hinting at it. So really time didn't slow, he just saw things that way from his perspective and was able to move quicker in those events as well because of the burst adrenaline theory you mentioned.

The monsters popping in might've just been there for combat purposes, but who knows, maybe Mundus did cause it, but it is strange it happens every time Vergil and Kat are in danger. Yet again, that too for be for a gameplay purpose.

But would've been better on their part though if they'd shown Dante a bit "what the hell did I just do" afterwards to imply it was him and it's a ability he's not figured out how to control yet. Me want some quicksilver ;_;

I forgot to mention it's something that a person can't usually repeat. I'm sure some people have been able to do it more than once, but it's not common. It all happened in one event.

I admit they pushed it by having him save them repeatedly. But this is still a possible explanation.

I don't think I even saw that thread. Either that or I forgot.

Sounds like we could just combine theories. And I agree the demons were probably just for the combat, make it more of a challenge so you're not just running over to save Kat and Vergil.

There are a lot of things they left out to make events more clear. A lot of it is left up to the player to theorize on.

I thought Dante was slowing time just to stop the car crashing into objects so he could move them out of the way (the objects, not the car... lol... sorry, I didn't think I was making much sense).

I think we might also be over analyzing it too much. It might just be an artistic device to let the player play the game. What I mean is that in fact, its just us experiencing the whole event subjectively so its slower, but if it was a cutscene, it would be Dante moving faster than the car and just moving things out of the way in a split second.

I'm pretty sure it was ultimately a crazy influx of power causing some sort of time slip, which Dante then used to his advantage in order to knock obstacles out of the car's path. I'm not sure Dante had much to do with it, since even he was like "What's happening?!" when the whole thing started.

Limbo causes plenty of strange-ass things (or strange ass-things!) to happen to the world, so I can imagine a gigantic blast of demonic magic into a localized area could start affecting the passage of time. I mean, we can observe that stuff in our own world, so funky Limbo time (sounds like a tropical beach party...) isn't entirely beyond the realm of reason.

Deus Ex Machina? Sure, but it also made for an interesting level to play :p

On the other hand, Elldawn, your theory reminds me of an instance a certain devil hunter was in when a demon had his friend in a chokehold :3

i had theorized in a thread a few months back that donte indeed shares the same characteristics and abilities as dante. that includes trickster, gun slinger, and quicksilver. so thats how i believe he did all of that

I see what you did there.

im guessing since vergil can use a version of doppelganger, Dante's gift is slowing down time( to a limited degree of course)

maybe being nephilim grants you a special ability unique to each individual nephilim.:sneaky:

I can't believe I forgot my own thread.

Yeah, it does seem like that, doesn't it?

Yeah. They did say Dante had abilities that Vergil didn't. It wouldn't be much of a surprise that each nephilim had their own abilities unique to themselves.
