*Stream of consciousness thoughts/pros and cons*

- NT does a good job of making Mundus look extremely powerful, Dante/Vergil never get this treatment. There is simply not enough action in the cutscenes.
- **** what you heard, this game is harder than it looks. You can claim super l33t status, but if you're on your first playthrough of Nephilim you'll probably die at least 8-10 times. Maybe more.
- NT succeeds in having a coherent, interesting plot. Their goal of having a narrative actually drive the gameplay instead of being a disjointed reason to have the Dante avatar kill stuff succeeds.
- Kat should have been Lady.
- I'll go ahead and eat a little crow here...game would benefit greatly from lockon lol (there, I said it).
- Backgrounds are absolutely amazing. Seeing them on yt videos don't do them justice.
- Grounded story seems to defeat the purpose of this being Devil May Cry. Aside from the ridiculousness of the world, too much of what happens is "normal".
- It's almost worth repeating, Dante does not do any DMC3 caliber cool stuff during cutscenes. A good example of this is the uninteresting way Dante reacts whenever he acquires a new weapon as opposed to what he did in the original series.
- I find it interesting that a lot of the things NT laid their collective hats on seems to all but be phased out by the end of the game. Dante having black hair, the idea of there being a world under the real one...demons secretly controlling society from positions of power. All things that CANNOT be in the next DmC. It's like they wanted to do something different JUST for this game and have it set up to basically usher in the old series with a sequel.
- Demon weapons simply need to be more god damn functional. I absolutely disagree with how limited Arbiter and Eryx are. They should have similar functionality as their angel counterpart, and that would have gone a long way in increasing combo creativity options.
- With that said, combo potential is higher than people give credit for. NT compensated for a more limited moveset by paying close attention to properties for moves (ie. Kablooeys detonation)
- the dream world where Dante unlocks his "potential" is interesting, but entirely unnecessary.
- Much better job displaying the brother dynamic than original series, but would have liked to see Dante/vergil vs. Mundus result as an actual battle side by side with Vergil
- **** Vergil's hat
- About 10% of the dialog is as bad as the detractors say, the other 90% is better than they'd ever admit.
- If there's a sequel, at least we have a good idea what Trish looks like
- All boss fights are better than Succubus. Boss fights in general better than I expected, in some part because they've been dehyped to hell. Bob Barbas and Lilith/baby were easily the best.
- Didn't particularly mind that Mundus was a God of War type spectacle. People who complain about this forget that when Dante fought Mundus in DMC1 it became some kind of stupid shooting mini game. This was way better than that.
- I really miss taunting.
- I believe this is a good foundation for NTs take on the series. I agree with mostly all the concepts but some of the execution was not up to par (the concept art in particular is a good example of what amazing ideas Ninja Theory actually had, as opposed to what they ultimately implemented).
- I like what lead up to the ending but not the ending itself...felt rushed, and more should have been said, especially by Vergil. However I like the ending for the tone it sets with limbo and the real world merging.
- Free camera and pretty colors makes me slightly motion sick. -___-
- Can't really comment much on the music, as I don't like metal so that all sounds pretty similar to me. The non metal music...I actually really like. Another successful reboot, SSX, got me into Dubstep so I don't mind it at all.

From this jumbling of thoughts I'd give the game a solid 8/10, but really no more. What I personally want out of a DMC is different than others but...I got some of what I wanted (freedom of creativity in combat) and other things I did not get (taunting, cool action happening outside of gameplay). Ultimately this game's potential is hindered by the demon weapons. If Arbiter had been SLIGHTLY smaller and Dante wielded it similar to Red Queen, and Eryx...wasn't...well...Eryx this game's replay value would be through the roof. As is, it's ultimately caged in by these two weapons and keeps me from singing it's praises as phenomenal. But really, I'm enjoying myself so that's what matters, right?

I agree with alot of what you say.
One of my biggest disappointments is what you bring up, Dante doesn't really do any cool things. THe coolest thing he does is put on his clothes in the intro. Lol
When he fights a boss doesn't do anything cool, when he gains a weapon he doesn't do anything cool, but in the credits you see a 3D model of Dante doing awesome fight scenes with a couple of demons. Why couldn't that sh*t happen in the game!

Right! I remember seeing that during the credits as well. It was more in line with what Dante would have done in Devil May Cry 3. They really need to get back to that.

Nice to see you enjoyed the game. Unfortunately I'll have to miss this and MGR:R for Sly 4 and until I can build a gaming PC. Personal issues aside, I do agree that the design and theme of the Demon weapons and Dante himself hinder their potential.

Dante is a rookie, he lacks refinement, but shows himself to be capable of various techniques. His fighting style is similar to a street fighter, he'll throw anything so he can survive. Demon weapons run a theme of being heavy hitting, powerful, but slow. I think the Arbiter's description states it's really heavy weapon. It shows when Dante swings the axe; it's moving him, he's not moving it. Aerial Flush also had a statement that it could not possibly aimed upwards. Eryx used by Dante really shows his street fighting style. He footwork seems off, I don't think he has his hands up most of the time, and he uses haymakers often.

It's a double edged sword really. While tying with Dante's origin and giving these weapons impact, they're hurt by the fact that the Arbiter might be too heavy and Dante lacks enough skills to use Eryx more. If Sparda or a much older Dante were to use the Arbiter, I'd imagine that he would be able to use it at quicker pace or able to one hand it completely with negligible consequences. Eryx could have been a masterpiece of translating boxing into a hack n' slash game. Feints, hooks, uppercuts, overcuts, bob n' weaves, superman punches, jabs, maybe even a lariat to show Dante's thuggish fighting style.

Capcom/NT being able to create limited, but efficient movesets is a good thing. However, the Demon weapons do appear to be too limited. Back/forward or forward/back inputs could have been used along with more pause combos for all the weapons. Platinum Games were able to use back/forward inputs with/without a lock-on in Bayonetta. But Bayonetta for me suffers with too much combos and a lack of a viewable moveset outside of practice mode from what I've experienced.

I'm actually okay that Dante doesn't have so much action in the cut-scenes.
When I saw Dante show off a new weapon, or do some insane maneuver, it only made him less relatable.
But here, it seems this Dante is ironically more human than the last, who just lived to say the last word.

I really do miss those scenes but I wonder if they really fit in the context of this game? I suppose they could have been integrated but I dont think it's a big issue. I always had mixed feelings about those scenes, while cool to look at, I sometimes felt slighted I could not do any of that stuff during the actual game

Well, like after Dante first gets his DT in DMC3...running down the tower and annihilating those blood goyles...was a thing I beauty. It didn't need to add anything to the story, it was just...a wonderful spectacle of awesomeness.

Well maybe Dante showing off his weapons would have been weird scenes to fit into this game, but brutal action scenes of Dante fighting demons wouldn't have been.

Yeah that probably would have made more sense, like when he gets the weapon a group of demons shows up in a cut scene and he does a cool demo of what the weapon can. Seems like it would have been a cool homage to older games while still keeping this games tone in tact

Oh my god I wish this had been implemented so much it hurts. It would have been perfect for both this Dante's personality and for the grittier style of combat in the game. And also insanely fun to play, as I have a preference for hand-to-hand-style weapons, when they're fluid enough.
