PROLOGUE

It's been five years. Five, long years since she passed. I miss her...so much.

Veln Reiv had been exploring the galaxy for quite some time now, and in his travels, she'd been the only person the Drell had ever fallen in love with. But he had to put the past behind him. Now it was time for the task at hand to be dealt with.

Omega was a pit for the scum of the Terminus System. And was it full of them. But one in specific had terribly miscalculated what would happen to him if he messed with Veln. Danzo Tellus, a human thug, or king thug, in his case, had recently robbed Veln of virtually everything he owned. His credits, his extra clothes, even the scraps he'd gathered from various other places among the galaxy as souvenirs; Danzo took everything. Veln only had the clothes on his back, but he would make Danzo pay.

The problem was a simple matter of getting past all of his goons, and Veln was no expert at sneaking. The blue, leather jacket he was wearing, along with his bright, lime green skin didn't help him. Fortunately, Omega was nothing but a huge hiding place. Everywhere you looked, there were nooks and crannies. You just had to know which ones to use.

The Afterlife club wasn't far away, and being the person Danzo was, Veln knew he'd most likely be there. He just had to get past all of Danzo's men, and he couldn't just walk right by them. They'd recognize him as the same guy they'd mugged earlier that week, and they'd just beat him again.

Veln thought quickly, and mixed in with a small group of aliens walking down the street. As soon as he could, he stepped out of the group and hid behind one of the large pipes protruding from the wall. Veln scanned the area with his large, black tinted eyes. When one took the time to really look at it, Omega was a hideous place. The ground was covered in rust and muck of sorts, the walls were dirty, stained with browns and grays of various shades. The people all looked like they'd killed at least once in their life, all of them moving in paranoid, jumpy ways.

Yes, this was Omega. Cesspit of the galaxy. Average death and crime rate in the place never declined, but only increased little by little every day.

The Drell took advantage of a split moment when no one was looking and climbed the pipe into a small duct above. It was steamy and humid. Veln would be lucky of he didn't develop a case of Kepral's syndrome. The thought of it made him cringe. Still, he crawled on, the large pipe right above him, and small cracks in the duct below him. The cracks were the perfect size. He could see out of them, and no one would notice him moving above.

It was when the crack grew larger, and the duct busted, spilling Veln out, that he knew he was in trouble. He landed right in the middle of the market district, and much to his dismay, all three of Danzo's thugs spotted him. There was a moment of absolute silence in the place, as everyone in sight stared right at Veln. And then the three men belonging to Danzo began walking towards him.

Veln crawled back, and struggled to get up. He immediately recognized a sharp, throbbing pain in his leg, and let out a grunt.

"Where do you think you're going, lizard face?" The middle man spoke with a devious grin on his face.

Veln looked around. So many people just staring. So many escape routes. So many open areas that he could get shot in. "Away from you."

Veln hopped up and leaped behind the closest person he could see, a Salarian, rolled as he landed, and began running as fast as he could. The pain in his leg faded into the background, as he was filled up with adrenaline. The thugs pulled their guns out and began firing at him. The Salarian he jumped behind was pelted with a spray of ammunition, and fell lifeless to the ground.

Veln was much faster than his armored predators, and as he rounded a corner closing in on one of the Afterlife entrances, he had enough time to hide. Glancing around at his surroundings, he took refuge behind a large stack of crates. He tried to hush his labored breaths, but that didn't matter.

A Batarian, obviously the owner of the crates, or whatever their contents were, pulled him back by the collar and cursed at him. "What the hell do you think you're doing?! I don't know who the hell you're running from, but if they shoot at you and hit these crates, it'll be my ass as well as yours. Get outta here!" He grunted at Veln one last time before tossing him out into the open.

Enough time had passed for the thugs to catch back up to him, and as soon as he was flung out, they spotted him and began firing. Unfortunately for the Batarian, they managed to peck a few holes into one of his crates.

As soon as the event unfolded, the ****ed off Batarian flew around the corner with a shotgun, pumping out shots at the thugs. At the same time, a Salarian came around the corner that Veln and the thugs ran by, and shouted out at the guards, before firing a small machine pistol, "You killed my brother! He was my hit, and you just screwed me out of a credit chit!"

A full on firefight broke out in the street, and it was a big enough distraction to the thugs chasing Veln, that he could escape with ease.

Finally able to take a few long breaths, he dusted himself off and headed for Afterlife. The club was filled with people, drinks, dancers, heavy music that penetrated you right to the core. It was the perfect place for Danzo, and more of his men unfortunately.

Veln looked around, trying to be as non-conspicuous as possible. That would be hard to do though, what with him being the only Drell in the place and all. He walked over to the bar and ordered a drink, staring at various faces in the place until he recognized Danzo's. Now he just had to get close enough to kill him, and not get caught. And thus, it was the ultimate hole in his plot to carry out his revenge. It would be impossible to kill Danzo in here and not get spotted. Veln would need another distraction of sorts.

For Veln, this distraction came in the form of a female Quarian. The one who was currently speaking with Veln. It was as he turned to order a drink, that she grabbed a small, metallic case from the table, and hurriedly climbed out of the booth to run. When Danzo turned back and saw her running with his case, he yelled out for his men to chase her, and he too, rushed after her.

Veln didn't even take a sip from the glass of alcohol he'd ordered. He was already tailing Danzo as soon as he stood up. Everyone one included in the chase sped out of Afterlife and back into the street...the same street that Veln had run from the firefight on. And to his surprise, the firefight was still alive and young, as none of the five included had died off...although quite a few bystanders did.

The Quarian ran through it all, bumping into one of the thugs on her way by. Danzo and the men with him followed, and then Veln right behind them. It was a long minute before Veln got close enough to tackle Danzo, and when he did, he did so with grace and power.

"Hello, Dan. Bet you weren't expecting to see me again so soon." Veln smiled.

"You! We killed you! You're dead!" Danzo's eyes widened with fear.

"Looks like you're wrong. All that training you put me through payed off." Veln's eyes narrowed. "Too bad being part of your mercenary group just wasn't my style."

"You're style?! You killed three of us back in the Batalla system!" Danzo pleaded.

"You killed an unarmed expedition team searching for Element Zero!" Veln felt the heat of anger fill up his body.

"They were stupid to come into the Terminus Systems without weapons." He chuckled, infuriating Veln even more.

"They were innocent! And you had them executed!" Veln screamed.

"What, so now you're a hero? What about all the people you've killed? What about when you killed her?! When you killed Kira!"

"That's none of your damn business you low life piece of trash!" Veln was struck with a mortifying sense of sadness at the mention of his long lost love. He felt his fist fly forward into Danzo's face. It was almost involuntary, but it felt good.

He only managed to hit him once before the stock of an assault rifle thudded across his face. He couldn't see for a moment, and as his vision came back, it was still blurry. Veln was on the ground now, looking up at the ceiling above the street. The firefight was still on, but the thugs who were chasing the Quarian were all standing above Veln.

He could barely hear them, but he could still make out most of the words.

"That Quarian got away - carrying the transmitter. We'll find - later. Did this jackass hurt you? - can kill him if you want."

"Do it."

And so the barrel of a rifle was shoved in Veln's face. But it was knocked away just as soon as it was put there. A few bursts of fire, a few thuds, a few dropped thugs, and no one was conscious aside from Veln and...who was it? He couldn't make out who she was, just that it was a female figure.

She stuck out her hand for Veln, "I don't know who you are, but your enemies are my enemies, so you're my friend."

She was speaking through a mask, so Veln had to assume that it was the Quarian. He took her hand, and stood up. "Many thanks to you, but how did you manage to knock them all out?"

"What? Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I can't fight."

"I believe you." Veln winced, rubbing his own wound. The rifle left a gash near his left eye. A small stream of blood trickled down his fingers, and he grunted in disapproval.

"C'mon, I'll patch you up. Besides, it's only a matter of time before the other three stop shooting, and come after us too."

"Agreed."

Chapter 1: Part 1

Veln woke up from what seemed like an eternity of sleep. He touched his face, remembering the wound inflicted upon him. There was a slight sting, but his skin was smooth.

"You're certainly up earlier than I expected." A giggle came from the corner. Veln looked over to see the Quarian. "I just finished eating a packet of nutrient paste...you're welcome to have some if you'd like."

Even if the wound had healed considerably, Veln still had a headache, so he humbly refused the offer, "No thank you...I don't feel up to eating right now."

She shrugged, tilting her head to one side, "Makes sense. You woke up a couple hours earlier than expected. I'd say we've been here for about three hours."

Veln looked around. It was a small room. He was on the only bed, and the Quarian was sitting across the room in a chair that was turned slightly away from a tiny table. "Where is here, exactly?"

"Oh, we're in one of the local areas on Omega. You passed out before we got into a cab, and I had an interesting conversation with the cab driver before he brought us here...heh, but here we are. I don't believe we've properly introduced ourselves." She stood up and eased over to Veln, holding out her hand. "I'm Zeni'Rehja nar Tasi."

Veln took her hand and shook it firmly, "I am Veln Reiv. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Zeni'Rehja. But, out of curiosity, did you say Nar Tasi? If I am correct, that means "Child of none", does it not?"

"Indeed it does. My family, along with my clan, have a tragic history. Rehja clan is a smaller part of the Flotilla, unheard of by most outsiders. And you are within your rights to wonder about the second half of my name, as I am a child of no one. My parents died when I was rather young, and I was sent on my Pilgrimage soon after." Veln sensed a hint of sadness in her voice.

"I have been scouring the galaxy in search of something that's worth taking back to the Flotilla for around five years now." She hesitated for a moment, looking at the floor, then glanced back up at him, "I finally got a piece of what I needed from those thugs we encountered not to long ago." She looked at the metallic case on the table.

Veln shared at quick look at it with her, and then turned his attention back to her, "A piece? What's in the case."

"A top class transmitter. With a little Element Zero, a sample of Palladium, and perhaps a few more electronic components, I can make something of use to the Migrant Fleet." She shrugged, and sat back down in the chair, resting one of her hands on the case.

Veln crossed his arms, "So...what exactly are you planning on making?"

"A High-frequency Palladium Scanner. Creating one will help us discover more abundant amounts of Palladium, which, if used correctly, will help the shielding on Flotilla ships, probably doubling their power." She nodded all the while as she spoke.

"I see. Impressive, it should make a fine addition to the Migrant Fleet."

"Thanks." She nodded yet again. "So, do you know that man, Danzo? I saw you speaking to him before you were knocked off."

"Yes...we have a riddled past. I joined him and his gang, hoping for an adventure. All I got out of it was regret and sadness. When I first started, it was everything I'd hoped it would be. I traveled to some of the most dangerous places in the Terminus, fought against evil men, took their valuables, and had a good time. We were more like a small group of heroes than a gang, and seeing the different places in the galaxy was amazing." Veln smiled, remembering those days, and then almost immediately frowned.

"Then it changed one day. I made a friend. A Turian named Favron Fekerius. He was the kindest being I'd ever met. A few others joined as well, but they were just young kids. Anyway, it was that same day that everything seemed to start it's decline. Danzo had a sudden change in personality. He seemed more edgy than normal. Acted very paranoid, as if someone was out to get him. Things happened. Things I hate to think of, but can never stop thinking of. Anyway, Favron and I quit not that long ago, and it wasn't even a week later that Danzo and a few of his thugs mugged me. Took everything I had." Veln's heart began to ache. He allowed his tears to trickle down his cheeks.

"That's terrible! I mean...why would they do that?!" Zeni stood in anger, almost shaking her fist at the very thought.

"I...killed several of them on an expedition in the Batalla system. We were all searching for pockets of Element Zero in the system when we happened upon another expedition team. A small group of unarmed scientists. Danzo had them killed. He said that they were being 'counter-productive' to our search. There were times before that...times that I did the killing...but that was when I had enough. It wasn't even a month ago that we set fire to the science team's camp."

Zeni stood there, seemingly admiring Veln, "Well, you obviously have a conflicting past, so I will not prod around for more information."

"Thank you." Veln smiled.

For a while, both sat in silence. Veln meditating on the day's events, and Zeni observing the transmitter she'd stolen from Danzo. Then Zeni asked the question that would start the two on a new journey altogether.

"So, because we have a common enemy, whaddya say we team up for a while?" She looked at him, anxious.

Veln gave a simple reply. "Sure."

-----

Danzo was sleeping when the doors to his hide out blew out of their respectful places and smacked into the wall. Gunfire was an immediate response, but any men Danzo had on his side were soon dead or dying. Smoke blanketed the room within a matter of minutes. Danzo was hiding behind his desk when the rasping voice of the person he feared most called out for him.

"Danzo, you've lost something that we need...that I need. That was no piece of trash you were in possession of. It was the most expensive thing I've ever laid down credits for!" The Turian walked through the haze, a blue silhouette outlining his body.

"I know you're in here, Dan. It's better to come out and face your punishment. Prolonging it will just make it worse."

Danzo, frightened beyond measure, stood up, shaking more than he ever had, "I'm sorry, Ilvrez. The Quarian we captured...she ran off with it. I'm really sorry"

"The Quarian, you say? And tell me, how did she escape with it, when she was supposed to be in bonds?" The Turian locked eyes with Danzo.

"I...she...oh man. I took her to Afterlife for a drink. Figured...we could befriend her rather than capture her. P-please don't kill me." Danzo seemed to edge away.

"Oh, it's too late for that, I'm afraid. You've already cost me too much, so I'd say punishment is due...but before I go, tell me, was she with anyone else? A certain Drell, perhaps?" Ilvrez pinned Danzo against the wall with his biotics, enveloping Danzo in a layer of blue as well. "Hurry before I make your death slower and more painful than it should be."

"Yes, yes! He's here." Danzo pleaded.

"Ah well, if Veln is here, I'm impressed. As for you...this will only take a moment." Ilvrez smiled, closing his eyes. A surge of energy seemed to concentrate in is arm, and then transfer to Danzo. Within moments, Danzo's screams of agony filled the district as his skin began to split from the energy that Ilvrez was releasing on him. When the deed was finished, Danzo was a bloody pulp.

Ilvrez turned to leave, only to be confronted by a small, human child, no older than six. The boy's mouth was gaping open, staring at Danzo's corpse, "Daddy..."

Ilvrez looked at Danzo's body, and then the boy, smiling, "Oh...Danzo had a little boy? Well, don't worry little guy. You'll be seeing daddy again real soon." Ilvrez assured the child as he unlatched his pistol from his belt.

Chapter 1: Part 2

Maverick sat in the booth, helmet on, eyes closed. He'd been napping, pushing the heavy sound of techno into the background as people all over Afterlife danced. Erena sat next to him. To his misfortune, the Asari had a knack for starting to talk right as he'd start really dozing off.

"So, have you found any leads on our target? Or are we still where we started when we got here." Erena scratched the back of her neck as she spoke.

"Ugh. Woman, if you talked anymore than you already do, my brain would melt. But to answer your question, no. No leads on Danzo, but if you're really anxious to find him, I suppose we can go talk to Aria." Maverick talked with his eyes still shut.

"Ew, no. Rather not...heard she's a real bitch to deal with." Erena cringed.

Maverick opened his eyes and looked over at her, "Trust me, she is. I've dealt with her in the past. I have wanted to shoot her on more than one occasion. But that wouldn't get me anywhere."

Erena shrugged, taking a sip from the drink she'd ordered a while back. "Well, we'll never get him just sitting here."

"Got a point. Come get me when you find him." Maverick chuckled.

"You punk! Don't talk to me like-" Erena was cut off when some young kid ran into the bar. His armor markings were that of Danzo's gang, Death's Head. Their armor was green with purple highlights. A small, black skull was imprinted on the left shoulder.

The kid pushed past several people over to a small group of three gang members. They were talking really quiet. "Hey, Maverick." Erena looked at the thugs and then Maverick.

"What." He grunted.

"Those guys seem really messed up about something right now." She paused, "Maybe we can find out something if we follow them."

Maverick didn't speak for a couple of minutes, instead peeking his head over at the thugs. "Yeah, let's do it. Anything to get us out of here and back to Illium a little faster."

-----
After Zeni had fallen asleep, Veln silently left the apartment. He found himself in a fairly common looking area. A street with a few more apartments, a food market, and a couple of kiosks made up the place. The food market was selling nothing but food meant for Dextro-Protein based species. That only included Turians and Quarians.

Looking over at the two kiosks revealed that an Elcor merchant was selling clothes, and that a Turian merchant was selling small arms. Veln went to see what kind of weapons the Turian was selling, when he recognized the Turians voice as he was talking to another Quarian.

"Forvan? Forvan Zekerius?" Veln asked, approaching the Turain slowly.

He looked up from talking to the seated Quarian, mandibles clicking, "Veln Reiv. I didn't expect to see you again so soon. It's only been a few weeks. Why are you on Omega?"

"Danzo." Veln replied.

"Are you rejoining Death's Head?" Forvan stepped forward curiously.

"No...I'm hunting him down."

"Hunting? Why?" Forvan's eyes narrowed.

"He and his thugs robbed me of everything I owned about a week after we quit. They mugged me." Veln shook his head.

"You too hmm?" Forvan sighed, "Well...he did the same thing to me. I was lucky to take this shop off of another Turian. He wanted to retire with all of the money he'd previously won in a bet on a Varren fight."

Veln, surprised, put his hand on Forvan's shoulder, "I'm sorry, brother."

"Eh, I can learn to cope with it...especially if you let me join you. I've been dying to get an opportunity for revenge." Forvan smiled.

"Oh, by all means, come with us. It'll be good to have familiar company." Veln smiled as well.

"Then I will...but, who is 'us'?" Forvan asked.

"A Quarian, Zeni'Rehja, helped me out earlier today. She's on her Pilgrimage, and she's also having problems with Death's Head." Veln said, shrugging. "We agreed to team up for a while."

"I see. Well, count me in. As far as I'm concerned, you're my best friend, so it'll be nice to stay in a team with you." Forvan nodded.

"It's nice to have you back in the team." Veln chuckled.

"Well, I suppose, if we're on a mission against a gang, we'll need weapons, so I've got that covered. Just tell me where you guys are staying and I'll be down there shortly." Forvan waited for a reply.

Veln turned and pointed, "The one down there at the end of the street. It's the only one that I've seen that doesn't have a window."

Forvan nodded again, "Noted. See you in a bit."

Veln gave him one more pat on the shoulder before heading back to the apartment. Upon entering, he was startled by the squeak of Zeni. "Oh, Veln! I thought you'd left for good. I was a little worried."

"Ha, it's okay. I should have told you that I was going outside for a few minutes. But I don't go back on agreements, so don't worry. I won't leave you until we're done."

"Well...thanks." Zeni sighed with relief.

"You're very welcome. Just so you know, I got another to join our group." Veln crossed his arms.

"Oh, who is it?" Zeni questioned him.

"Forvan, my old friend that I told you about."

"Really? Well that's okay! It's good to know that you and your friend are still in touch with eachother after what happened."

"Indeed."
