Because this show just seems to LOVE killing off characters I like... Anyway, the story behind this is there is a character named Gen Shishio, who is 25% ayakashi, which allows him to turn into a wolf-man. There are three reasons why I'm doing this fic.
1. He had just discovered how to transform without going berserk, then he died. Really dumb way to kill off a character.
2. The only reason he died is because he was blindsided and then the medics couldn't make it in time.
3. He's awesome. (Having Zero's VA automatically does so.)
Without further ranting, here's the fic, as I believe it should've happened.
Gen jumped from barrier to barrier towards a demon, fangs bared. The wind whipped through the long fur on his head and past his wolfish snout as he jumped. He slashed off three of the horse-demon's arms, snarling.
"Oh no you don't!" The demon shouted, his arms beginning to regenerate. However, just as soon as they began to grow back, Gen jumped back at the demon and cut them off again. The demon snarled and began rapid firing energy blasts at Gen, who dodged them by again jumping from barrier to barrier. The demon formed a shield around himself as he charged up another shot. Seeing an opportunity, Gen jumped past the demon and slashed.
I can't believe this! the demon thought as his neck was sliced. He can penetrate my barrier?
"One more attack should do it!" Gen said out loud, jumping from Kekkai to Kekkai in an attempt to attack the demon. He felt a burning sensation on his stomach and saw that the flame tattoo on his stomach was beginning to glow. It burns... He thought, recalling something a friend of his told him.
To limit your powers, the flame tattoo will begin to emit a burning sensation. He remembered. The stronger your powers get, the more it will burn.
Gen forgot about the pain as more energy blasts were fired past him, breaking his trance. "Die, wolf boy!" The demon growled, using his remaining three arms to continue firing.
"Sorry, not tonight!" Gen shouted back, jumping at the demon and slashing off two more arms. As he jumped past them, white sparks began to fly off his body. My body is groaning and squeaking... He thought urgently. C'mon, you can't give up on me now! He jumped at the demon again...
Then felt a relentless pain in his back as a man with black hair, red eyes and glasses ran him through with a pair of katanas. Gen cried out, spitting blood as he did so. He began to fall, the man still holding onto his katanas behind him. "K... Kaguro..." Gen growled, unable to move from the position he froze in.
"Gen Shishio." Kaguro said, smiling sadistically. "You were too focused on one opponent to notice me. Shame, since you only just now learned to control your powers."
"Shut up..." Gen said darkly. "I don't want to hear you..."
"Oh, tsk tsk." Kaguro clicked. "I'll give you one last chance. Join us, and you won't die."
"Screw off." Gen snarled.
"Wrong answer." Kaguro said in a suddenly serious tone, ripping his blades out through Gen's sides. Gen cried out again, then Kaguro disappeared, letting Gen freefall.
"Gen!" Tokine, a friend of Gen, cried out. "Ketsu!" She shouted, creating a rubberized barrier for Gen to fall onto. She jumped onto it, Yoshimori following suit.
"Gen!" Yoshimori yelled, kneeling next to Gen with his hand in Yoshimori's. "Gen, you can't die!"
Gen slowly reverted to his human form, the flame tattoo turning a dull blue, his face and eyes pale. "I... Don't think I'm gonna make it..." He said. Small strings of flesh were already stitching his wounds shut, but the process seemed slow.
"Gen..." Yoshimori said quietly, tears racing down his cheeks. "Don't speak, Gen, save your strength..."
"How pathetic!" The demon above them mocked, a smile on his horse-like face. He pointed his single remaining arm at the group on the ground, to which Yoshimori responded by jumping to a nearby building top and creating a Kekkai around the demon.
"Stupid human." The demon growled as the Kekkai began to waver. "I can break right through this!"
Yoshimori grunted, then looked to Tokine, eyes pleading.
If I can just distract him somehow... Tokine thought urgently. Her eyes traced the demon's arm to the energy ball in the demon's hand. That's it! "Ketsu!" She shouted, putting a thin barrier through the energy ball and destroying it, distracting the demon and causing the Kekkai around him to solidify.
"METSU!" Yoshimori screamed, imploding the barrier along with the demon. He jumped back down to the Kekkai on which Gen laid.
So many memories rushing to me at once... Gen thought, a flood of emotions and memories in his head.
A rush of air passed through the group, and Yoshimori recognized it immediately. It's the same feeling as when that other guy accepted his death... "Gen!" He all but screamed. "Gen! Don't give up! DAMMIT, DON'T DIE ON ME!"
Stop shouting... Gen thought, eyes closed. I have to sleep...
"GEN!" Yoshimori shouted, once again hot tears streamed down his cheeks. "GEN! Don't lose! You can't lose to some idiot wearing glasses!"
At that moment, a violet aura appeared around Gen, and his body stopped functioning.
--
Where am I? Gen thought. All he saw was pure blackness. Darkness as far as the eye could see.
You are in my sanctuary. Said a caring, female voice.
Who are you?! Gen replied in thought, confused.
I am Karusumori, the mistress of power. The voice responded. I can save your life. At a cost...
I've already accepted my death... Gen said, looking down at his feet.
But your friends haven't. Karusumori responded. To prove her point, a wall appeared, and upon that wall was a moving picture of Yoshimori and Tokine, both crying over their friend's death.
They're crying for me? Gen thought, his heart suddenly heavy. He felt his chest for the wounds he knew he'd received and didn't find them.
Your life means much to them. Karusumori said. Please... Her voice began to break, as if she was crying. I don't want to see any more innocents die.
Gen smirked, chuckling. Alright. Let's make some fireworks, then. He said enthusiastically.
--
"Gen..." Yoshimori whimpered. Gen's body lay still, silent, unmoving.
"Yoshimori..." Tokine began, putting a hand on Yoshimori's shoulder. She didn't get to talk much, though, because Gen's body suddenly began shouting and squirming in pain. The wounds healed, and the flame tattoo glowed a bright red before fading completely. Gen's body shifted from human to ayakashi, and he kept shouting. Then, all was still, with Gen panting ever so quietly, eyes moving feverishly behind their lids.
"A blessing from Karusumori...?" Yoshimori thought, surprised.
Tokine smiled. "Perhaps."
"What did I miss?" An old voice said from behind the group. It was Sumimura, village elder and Yoshimori's grandfather, who bore an uncanny resemblance to a certain video game villain.
"Oh, not much..." Yoshimori said, looking at Gen's transformed state. I wonder if it's permanent this time... He thought. I'm gonna have a hell of a time explaining this to grandfather...
--
Gen awoke to brightness, laying in a stark white bed. He groaned and moved his clawed hand in front of his face to block the light, then gasped as his green eyes focused on his hand. He got up with a start, looking around in surprise. "Where...?!" He began, then felt a hand gently push him back into the bed.
"Don't freak out like that." Yoshimori said with a smirk. "You looked like you wanted to kill me, wolfy."
"But... H... How did... Shouldn't I be dead?" Gen stammered, still somewhat in shock.
"Technically, yes." Tokine said from the foot of the bed. "Some miracle of Karusumori kept you alive. However, you're now..."
"99% ayakashi." Yoshimori finished.
"How do you know it's 99%?" Gen asked, confused.
"Because my dad could still see you, meaning you're still part human." Yoshimori said.
Gen raised his hand again to stare at it. So this is what she meant by "at a cost"...
"You okay?" Yoshimori asked.
"Never better." Gen said, sitting up slowly. He felt a stinging sensation and feared it was his flame tattoo, but he looked down and saw it wasn't there. Instead, the stinging was coming from two fresh looking scars. "Ah, crap..." He groaned as he felt the scars with the tip of a claw.
"Since you're almost pure ayakashi, those will go away in less than a week." Tokine explained.
"Seriously?!" Gen said excitedly, jumping out of the bed, then clutching his stomach and falling back onto it. He began laughing, despite the minor bit of pain it caused him. "I think I'm not going to be walking anywhere for a little while, then." He looked up at Yoshimori. "So... Can I stay with you? I'm fairly certain my clan wouldn't accept me as I am now. They think I'm too dangerous."
"Say no more." Sumimura said, stepping into the room. "After Yoshimori explained the situation to me, I've agreed to give you a permanent room in our home." He smirked, the smile almost hidden by his moustache. "Imagine yourself as an adopted grandson."
Gen smiled at Sumimura, but said nothing. He looked out the window next to him at the sunrise, the water and sky a brilliant orange color.
"Thinking hard, Gen?" Yoshimori asked.
"Don't call me Gen anymore." Gen said with a smirk. "Call me... Nashigen."
"No limit, eh?" Yoshimori said, returning Gen's smirk. "Not bad."
"I thought you'd say that." Gen said, his smirk widening. He turned away. "Now, let me sleep. I kind of need it."
"Of course." Yoshimori said, leaving the room. Tokine and Sumimura bowed respectfully, then left as well.
Gen returned his gaze to the sunrise. Kaguro... He thought, his expression hardening. This isn't the end. Not by a long shot...
