It's a reboot! or not, just watch the interview

He said it has no place chronologically with the other games in the series. That is what makes it a reboot. They are rebooting the series with a different Dante, with a different origin.

Oh boy did I fall for that one myself, I thought it was set before DMC 3. So yeah, there was doubt by many fans. Just to back up TC's point.
 
the reboot is ok but i wish they would have finished the story of the devil may cry and closed the holes in the game's story because it feels like they just left you hanging in the air and i was really interested in knowing what happened to sparda and eva like that or how nero was somehow related to dante or how nero can use the yamato the way he does there's just too much holes in the game story and it seems too harsh to just make a reboot when the original game's story was interesting and mysterious
 
Dammit! I was seriosuly hopeing this would be an orgin story -_- And yes I thought this was before dmc3, as well.....
