Kamiya's version probably grew up like the secret apprentice from Star Wars the Force unleashed. He was kidnapped and brainwashed/raised from childhood to be a loyal follower and probably did believe the lies till he screwed up or shook off the conditioning and rebelled.

He failed and Mundus got fed up and snapped, turning him into Nero Angelo.
