Gamasutra Interview: Tameem Antoniades

I loved reading this, and I 100% agree with TA about all this. The games I love the most are those with a great story in it, and to me, it is an important part of games. I would love to play a game the way I read a book, except that in a game, I am actually playing out the story myself by controlling the main protagonists and such. Of course, gameplay and graphics are important as well, but in all honestly, I can deal with not so good gameplay and somewhat poor graphics, as long there is an interesting storyline in the game. To me, in the end, it is the story in the game that catches my interest, and not so much fancy graphics or gameplay.

Great article, wally. Thanks for sharing this. ^^

To me what makes a story great (A story for a game, book or film) is the way in which it is executed. As long as it stays true to what it purely is, and everything is focused on the main details of the plot then it'll run smoothly. A story needs to know where it stands, from beginning to end. And everything along the way plays its part in making that story grab you and intrigue you, whether it's a few words that really move you or a scene that just blows you away. Everything within the story will make the story what it is. So yeah, maybe your story idea is great but it could end up awful if done badly.

Thanks for this, it made an interesting read. ;D
I love games with well-thought and exciting stories and characters, and with NT doing DmC, I expect them to give me something like that, moreover after reading this, since Tameem really seems to strive for such an object. :D

thanks, it was a nice little look at who AT is i think and his direction he wants to lead.

Its almost tragic the way he talks about how he expected "enslaved" to come out and the aftermath of what happens when a game "flops". But since "enslaved" didnt do too well, its demanding the entire NT team to pull together on DmC.

From what I understand of the article, it was the lack of PR on the game that was the reason for Enslaved's flop. So it's not really TA's fault. I think they did well with the game, I still play it occasionally and enjoy it from time to time. ^^

The only thing I find annoying about DmC's PR is the lack of actual storyline info we've gotten so far, especially when I know that's something Ninja Theory really puts alot of heart and soul into making.

Maybe they are deliberately avoiding telling anything about the storyline so that when the game comes out, the people who buy it and play it could experience it fresh and surprising without any revealing tidbits? If that is the case, I can easily forgive them, because I always hate it when, let's say for instance, a movie trailer tells you everything beforehand and ruins jokes that would be more fun to see in the movie without seeing them first in a trailer.

LOL you mean the previews that are so spoilered that you don't even have to go watch the movie cause you already saw the whole thing in 3 minutes? :D
I hate those. I think NT have been doing well with the teasers. Just when you think you have it figured out, they reveal another detail that has your curiosity peaked.

Said it better than I would have!

That's right, I meant that kind of trailers... they're pure evil! So in a sense I could say that I'm even happy that NT is being so secretive with DmC, though it still is driving me crazy. I feel like I'm a dog tied to a pole with a steak in front of me, but the leash is too short for reaching the yummy piece. So there I sit, smelling the aromas and feeling confused, lol.

So AT said his team was going to start on another Game in a few months so does that mean DmC is almost complete?

Hmm, maybe they are going to work on two projects at the same time...? Though, seeing how much they concentrate on DmC, it doesn't seem to be the case. But then again, I assumed that DmC would be published, I don't know, maybe late 2012 at the earliest? Because making a game takes a lot of time and somehow everything seems to be halfway still -- or then it's in actuality far more ready than developers have given the impression of.

Oh my. About it when they get the DmC game ready and out: on a big Finnish net store selling everything from games to movies I saw DmC listed up already as a product you can pre-order. The price was 49,95 € for both PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. The release date wasn't clear, though.

Edit: I just realized they had categoried the game as "Action, Adventure, Online game". Online game? Does that mean something similar that was in Bayonetta or what?

A potential On-line element to DmC, I wonder what that means? =/

From what I understand of the article, it was the lack of PR on the game that was the reason for Enslaved's flop.

They put so much money into the PR of Enslaved, there was posters and adverts everywhere. There was also a IGN partnership they had where they paid them for a good review (its been proven) and to put advertisements before every IGN video for awhile.

The real reason it flopped was it was rushed and had a LOT of technical problems. I would also like to remind people that they don't think the reason it didn't sell well was that it didn't have enough PR, they blamed us, the DMC fans for it.

Well, in all honesty, DMC fans can be a bunch of a-holes. ;P

from reading this i believe that DmC is in good hands is it just me or does someone else have a feeling like this

I think this might be his first appearance where he seems humble and knowledgeable in stead of of the jerk everyone make him out to be.

it was pretty informative on the relationship between a developer and publisher and how stories are done in games. i thinking that story and gameplay have to go had in hand when creating a game in order to compliment each other fully.

Enslaved's failure could attributed to various different things and neither side can be discounted. Enslaved was noted for having somwhat weak gameplay and not required to be a first time purchase. even if you want to see the story, you could just rent it and save money for something else. You should take in consideration the dmc fans reaction to the game tho since it came out soon after the tgs 10 announcement. It was fair game to be hated on as the devs didnt do a good job of defending it and fans were looking at with rage colored glasses.

Im thinking that they could have given more of the game's story without giving away all the twists and turn. but just as long as we get something soon i will be happy.

I'm sure they could of spoiled it for us but wheres the fun in that. Alot of people complained that since the game engine was changed that dmc was an automatic fail, so what did they do? released gameplay demo after gameplay demo. To be honest i've never seen a game try to build up momentum behind it by not releasing anything about the story but im not surprised. Capcom know's what their doing and the longer they wait the more rumors are spread and controversy brews and that gets peoples attention.
i'm actually tryin to take my mind off of DmC for a while. So much has been talked about, and a lot of it is repeated information. And its making me tired.
So many other games are coming out too but as of lately, they've all been after thoughts and i think i should turn my attention to something else.
