Fallout 3...My first workbench

I've heard from a lot of sources that If you put a weapon or piece of armor on your workbench in your house and wait for a period of time, most stated that it is between 1 and 2 weeks, your weapon/armor will be completely fixed.

Can anyone here verify that this is true? Has anyone even heard of this other than me?

I have tried it and it doesn't seem to work...then again I was using it on the operation anchorage equipment but w/e.
