The sun was high in the sky as Yusuke snuck out to the roof of Sarayashiki Junior High. Class was boring, as usual, but the recent decline of Demon World activity had left him with no alternative to attending school, especially when coupled with the fact that Keiko wouldn’t exactly be pleased if she discovered that he was ditching…again.
After a quick check to ensure that he was alone, Yusuke took off his green uniform jacket and threw it to the ground before joining it a few moments later. He closed his eyes, relishing in the gentle breeze that had just picked up. Wow, it’s nice up here. Has it really been that long since I was able to just relax on the roof?
“Yusuke Urameshi!” The simple phrase shattered Yusuke’s silence like a blow to the jaw. He recognized that voice too easily; Keiko Yukimura was on the rampage once again. Yusuke kept his eyes closed as the clipped sound of her shoes hitting the ground signaled Keiko’s approach. Maybe if I just play dead she’ll lose interest and leave.
“Open your eyes, Yusuke. I know you aren’t asleep.” Yusuke sheepishly sat up and rubbed the back of his head.
“Hey there, Keiko! Iwamoto let you out early?”
“No, he’s still giving the lecture.”
Yusuke blinked. He had come up on the roof specifically because he knew Keiko wouldn’t ditch class if her life depended on it. So why was she on the roof, beaming at him, when they both knew that Iwamoto would make them pay for this later?
“Shouldn’t you be in there then, Keiko?”
“I suppose I should. But you always seem to enjoy your time out here…Why can’t I share it with you?” Keiko smiled again, and Yusuke couldn’t help but return the gesture, especially when she came and sat beside him. He looked over at her and opened hi s mouth to say something, when—SMACK. Keiko’s hand met his face and his face met the ground.
“Jesus! What was that for Keiko?!” Yusuke sat up, his eyes watering.
“I can’t believe you’re ditching again! How do you expect to pass if you’re never around to take any tests?”
“My mom will—“
“You can’t always rely on your mother!”
Yusuke flinched as the words assaulted his eardrums. Keiko was obviously not pleased, and he really wasn’t in the mood for another slap. He sighed and stuffed his hands in his pockets.
“Alright, Keiko, I get it. You’re not happy.” Keiko glared at him, and drew her hand back for another slap. Yusuke blanched. “B-but lemme make it up to you, alright? You just tell me what I want and I’ll get it for ya.” Keiko lowered her hand.
“Do you really mean that Yusuke? You get me anything?”
Yusuke nodded. “Name it, Keiko.” Spending some cash is worth it if it’ll get her off my back.
“I want you back in class. You have five minutes to get there before something bad happens, and believe me, it will happen.”
“Wait what? That’s not what I meant, Keiko!”
“I don’t care. It’s what I want. See you in five minutes, Yusuke!”” She turned and walked away before Yusuke could respond.
Yusuke sighed, and picked up his jacket. He certainly didn’t want to experience Keiko’s wrath twice in one day; Suffering through Iwamoto’s class would be a small price to pay if it saved his face. As he made his way to the door, he heard the soft thump of shoes landing on pavement.
He froze, instinctively preparing for combat. “Who’s there? If you show yourself I might be nice and only beat you half to death.”
“I doubt you could manage to scratch me, Spirit Detective.”
Yusuke turned around, grinning. “Well well….if it ain’t my favorite fire demon. How you been, Hiei?”
The demon in question scoffed. “It’s none of your concern how I’m doing. But I suppose you’re wondering what I’m doing here.”
“Just a little.”
“It seems we have a new assignment from Koenma. He instructed me to inform you, and then gather the others for a brief explanation.”
“Wow, Hiei. That’s the most I’ve ever heard you say…ever.”
Hiei scowled. “That is beside the point. We have to go. Now.”
Yusuke cast a glance back at the door. “Look, I’d love to run off on some adventure with you guys but I kinda have somewhere to be. You see, I’m in a bit of hot water with Keiko…”
“Need I remind you that you are the Spirit Detective? You are the only thing standing between the human world and its certain annihilation at the hands of the demons. Your petty social problems can wait.”
“But Hiei—“
“Move, Yusuke. “
“Oh, fine! But if she’s angry at me I’m letting YOU take the heat!”
Silence.
Yusuke growled and headed downstairs for Kuwabara’s classroom. He then barged in and sat himself beside his rival. Kuwabara tore his eyes away from his notes and glared at Yusuke. “What the hell do you want, Urameshi?”
“We’ve got a case. We have to go…now.”
“Like hell I do!”
The surrounding students stared at Kuwabara, who turned a lovely shade of pink before lowering his voice. “I don’t want to leave! My grades are suffering enough as it is!”
“That’s too bad Kuwabara. Hiei’s waiting on the roof and he ain’t taking no for an answer.”
Kuwabara scowled. “It figures that he’d be the source of my problems…” He closed his textbook and left, with Yusuke right behind him.
When they exited the building they found Hiei waiting for them by the tree. Much to their surprise, Kurama was there as well.
“I thought all of us were going to get him!” Yusuke exclaimed.
“You took too long. I’ve already informed him of our situation.”
“Too long?! Listen here, Shorty, Urameshi was in the classroom with me all of five minutes! How could that possibly take too long?!”
“If you knew how to tell time, you’d know that he was in there for fifteen. Fool.”
Kuwabara moved to wrap his hands around Hiei’s neck when they suddenly heard bubbly laughter from above.
“Now now, boys, don’t go killing each other just yet.”
“Oh…hey Botan.” Yusuke said flatly as Botan floated down to Earth on her oar. The blue-haired angel of death tilted her head in confusion.
“Lacking our usual enthusiasm, Yusuke?”
“Just tell us what the hell Koenma wants us to do.”
“I’m afraid he wants to see you four in person. Hop on.”
Yusuke scowled at her, but when it became obvious that Botan was being completely serious he and the others climbed on. This day keeps getting better and better…
