The sun was high in the sky as Yusuke snuck out to the roof of Sarayashiki Junior High. Class was boring, as usual, but the recent decline of Demon World activity had left him with no alternative to attending school, especially when coupled with the fact that Keiko wouldn’t exactly be pleased if she discovered that he was ditching…again.
After a quick check to ensure that he was alone, Yusuke took off his green uniform jacket and threw it to the ground before joining it a few moments later. He closed his eyes, relishing in the gentle breeze that had just picked up. Wow, it’s nice up here. Has it really been that long since I was able to just relax on the roof?
“Yusuke Urameshi!” The simple phrase shattered Yusuke’s silence like a blow to the jaw. He recognized that voice too easily; Keiko Yukimura was on the rampage once again. Yusuke kept his eyes closed as the clipped sound of her shoes hitting the ground signaled Keiko’s approach. Maybe if I just play dead she’ll lose interest and leave.
“Open your eyes, Yusuke. I know you aren’t asleep.” Yusuke sheepishly sat up and rubbed the back of his head.
“Hey there, Keiko! Iwamoto let you out early?”
“No, he’s still giving the lecture.”
Yusuke blinked. He had come up on the roof specifically because he knew Keiko wouldn’t ditch class if her life depended on it. So why was she on the roof, beaming at him, when they both knew that Iwamoto would make them pay for this later?
“Shouldn’t you be in there then, Keiko?”
“I suppose I should. But you always seem to enjoy your time out here…Why can’t I share it with you?” Keiko smiled again, and Yusuke couldn’t help but return the gesture, especially when she came and sat beside him. He looked over at her and opened hi s mouth to say something, when—SMACK. Keiko’s hand met his face and his face met the ground.
“Jesus! What was that for Keiko?!” Yusuke sat up, his eyes watering.
“I can’t believe you’re ditching again! How do you expect to pass if you’re never around to take any tests?”
“My mom will—“
“You can’t always rely on your mother!”
Yusuke flinched as the words assaulted his eardrums. Keiko was obviously not pleased, and he really wasn’t in the mood for another slap. He sighed and stuffed his hands in his pockets.
“Alright, Keiko, I get it. You’re not happy.” Keiko glared at him, and drew her hand back for another slap. Yusuke blanched. “B-but lemme make it up to you, alright? You just tell me what I want and I’ll get it for ya.” Keiko lowered her hand.
“Do you really mean that Yusuke? You get me anything?”
Yusuke nodded. “Name it, Keiko.” Spending some cash is worth it if it’ll get her off my back.
“I want you back in class. You have five minutes to get there before something bad happens, and believe me, it will happen.”
“Wait what? That’s not what I meant, Keiko!”
“I don’t care. It’s what I want. See you in five minutes, Yusuke!”” She turned and walked away before Yusuke could respond.
Yusuke sighed, and picked up his jacket. He certainly didn’t want to experience Keiko’s wrath twice in one day; Suffering through Iwamoto’s class would be a small price to pay if it saved his face. As he made his way to the door, he heard the soft thump of shoes landing on pavement.
He froze, instinctively preparing for combat. “Who’s there? If you show yourself I might be nice and only beat you half to death.”
“I doubt you could manage to scratch me, Spirit Detective.”
Yusuke turned around, grinning. “Well well….if it ain’t my favorite fire demon. How you been, Hiei?”
The demon in question scoffed. “It’s none of your concern how I’m doing. But I suppose you’re wondering what I’m doing here.”
“Just a little.”
“It seems we have a new assignment from Koenma. He instructed me to inform you, and then gather the others for a brief explanation.”
“Wow, Hiei. That’s the most I’ve ever heard you say…ever.”
Hiei scowled. “That is beside the point. We have to go. Now.”
Yusuke cast a glance back at the door. “Look, I’d love to run off on some adventure with you guys but I kinda have somewhere to be. You see, I’m in a bit of hot water with Keiko…”
“Need I remind you that you are the Spirit Detective? You are the only thing standing between the human world and its certain annihilation at the hands of the demons. Your petty social problems can wait.”
“But Hiei—“
“Move, Yusuke. “
“Oh, fine! But if she’s angry at me I’m letting YOU take the heat!”
Silence.
Yusuke growled and headed downstairs for Kuwabara’s classroom. He then barged in and sat himself beside his rival. Kuwabara tore his eyes away from his notes and glared at Yusuke. “What the hell do you want, Urameshi?”
“We’ve got a case. We have to go…now.”
“Like hell I do!”
The surrounding students stared at Kuwabara, who turned a lovely shade of pink before lowering his voice. “I don’t want to leave! My grades are suffering enough as it is!”
“That’s too bad Kuwabara. Hiei’s waiting on the roof and he ain’t taking no for an answer.”
Kuwabara scowled. “It figures that he’d be the source of my problems…” He closed his textbook and left, with Yusuke right behind him.
When they exited the building they found Hiei waiting for them by the tree. Much to their surprise, Kurama was there as well.
“I thought all of us were going to get him!” Yusuke exclaimed.
“You took too long. I’ve already informed him of our situation.”
“Too long?! Listen here, Shorty, Urameshi was in the classroom with me all of five minutes! How could that possibly take too long?!”
“If you knew how to tell time, you’d know that he was in there for fifteen. Fool.”
Kuwabara moved to wrap his hands around Hiei’s neck when they suddenly heard bubbly laughter from above.
“Now now, boys, don’t go killing each other just yet.”
“Oh…hey Botan.” Yusuke said flatly as Botan floated down to Earth on her oar. The blue-haired angel of death tilted her head in confusion.
“Lacking our usual enthusiasm, Yusuke?”
“Just tell us what the hell Koenma wants us to do.”
“I’m afraid he wants to see you four in person. Hop on.”
Yusuke scowled at her, but when it became obvious that Botan was being completely serious he and the others climbed on. This day keeps getting better and better…

After a long and cramped journey to the Spirit World, Yusuke found himself in a chair beside between Kurama and Kuwabara. Koenma’s office was as plain as Yusuke remembered—the large wooden desk with the red poofy chair was directly in front of him, with a large file cabinet a few feet behind the desk.
The door swung open and Koenma walked in, closely followed by his assistant, George. After a brief search around the room, he took a seat in the plush chair. Yusuke and Kuwabara stared at him expectantly.
“I suppose you’re wondering why I called you all here.” Yusuke opened his mouth, but Koenma cut him off. “Something big has recently happened in the Spirit World, and I have been put in charge of a very dangerous item. However, because I’m a busy man, I don’t have the time to sit around and ensure its safety. So that is exactly what I’m asking you four to do.”
“What is it, exactly?” Kurama asked from his chair. “Are we dealing with a weapon of the same caliber as the Forbidden Artifacts?”
“If that’s the case, we might want to keep it away from Hiei.” Yusuke said with a snicker. Hiei and Koenma glared at him.
“No, it’s far more dangerous than that. Now I realize that its appearance may be deceiving, but I warn you now: Should it fall into the wrong hands, the entire human world could be destroyed…and that would not make my father happy.”
“Yeesh, we haven’t even seen it yet and I’m terrified…” Kuwabara muttered.
“As you should be. George, get the item.”
“Yes, sir.” The ogre quickly left and returned with a large, black box. Koenma smiled grimly at him before George put the box in the toddler’s hands.
“I warn you again. The power of this object is overwhelming. I will not be surprised if you faint.”
“Just open it.” Hiei snapped.
Koenma glared at him before opening the box. Kuwabara gasped. Kurama’s eyes widened.
“A strawberry?!” Yusuke demanded.
Koenma slammed the box shut. “Not just any strawberry, you fool! As any competent detective could tell, this strawberry has a demonic aura about it!”
Yusuke looked over at Kuwabara. “Please tell me he’s messing around.”
Kuwabara shook his head. “This strawberry has definitely got something evil about it.”
“For once, I agree with the fool.” Hiei said, stepping forward. “My eye is picking up a powerful aura.”
“Would you mind telling us why it’s emulating from that strawberry?” Kurama said, staring pointedly at the box.
“Ah, there’s an interesting story behind that. You see, about a week ago a demon escaped from the Demon World and through some glitch managed to break into here.”
“It’s not that hard to do.” Hiei said flatly. Kurama chuckled.
“He was in my office before the guards were able to land a lethal blow.” Koenma continued, ignoring the chuckles. “Unfortunately, as he lay dying, he was able to seal his aura into the object that was closest to him…which happened to be the strawberry that I was about to eat.”
“So this super dangerous demon….sealed his soul into a strawberry? Is that what you’re saying?”
Koenma sighed. “Yes, Yusuke, that is exactly what I am saying.”
“Oh, that’s just GREAT!” Yusuke leapt to his feet. “I can see it now! ‘Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t show up Keiko, I was busy safeguarding a demonic strawberry!!” He glared at Koenma. “Do you realize that I’m going to be killed now because of this stupid case?!”
“It’s not a stupid case Yusuke! If the wrong person gets hold of this strawberry the results will be devastating!!”
“So just eat it!!”
“I CAN’T!!”
Yusuke blinked. “What do you mean you can’t eat it? It’s a strawberry.”
“I was about to explain that before you went berserk. Now kindly take a seat, Mr. Urameshi, and I will continue.”
Yusuke sheepishly sat down.
“Now then, about the strawberry: Apparently the demon’s power can only be released if one is to consume it. I’d estimate his power to be about A or B class, so naturally we’ll want to keep it away from the wrong people.”
“Well we can’t keep it safe forever. Someone will eventually get their hands on it.”
“I know this, Yusuke, which brings us to part two of your assignment. I want you to keep this strawberry safe…until the designated demon obtains it.”
“Wait…I thought we were supposed to keep this AWAY from the demons.” Kuwabara scratched the back of his head in confusion. “And now you’re telling us we’re supposed to give it to them?”
“Technically it isn’t a demon….it’s one of our contacts that happens to reside in the Demon World. As such, they have extensive knowledge over demonic artifacts and will be able to destroy this safely.”
“You know, we could just ask Kurama to do it. He’s pretty smart as well.”
“While that is a nice compliment, Kuwabara, I’m afraid I haven’t seen a case like this before. I sealed my essence into a human fetus…but an inanimate object? Such power is unstable…I wouldn’t know how to go about destroying it safely.”
“Great…Here I was hoping we would save some time…” Yusuke crossed his arms. Keiko’s going to murder me…
“Now, we’ve agreed to meet in a specific location.”
“And just where is that?” Hiei asked dryly.
“Botan will take you there. Now, please leave. And I’ll be keeping the box…I spent way too much money on it.”
Yusuke opened the box and put the strawberry in his pocket. “Fine…let’s just get this over with.”
Botan grinned at them. “Hop on, boys!”

“A strawberry field? We’re meeting the representative from the Demon World in a STRAWBERRY FIELD?!”
“Calm down, Yusuke. Koenma probably chose this location because he thought it might look a little strange if complete strangers were exchanging fruit in a busy street.”
Yusuke groaned. “You’re probably right Kurama. I’m just bored out of my mind…what am I supposed to do in a strawberry field?”
Kuwabara shrugged. “As long as you keep that strawberry away from me, I don’t really care.”
An evil grin slowly spread across Yusuke’s face. “You mean…this strawberry?” He asked, dangling the strawberry in front of Kuwabara’s face.
Kuwabara backed away. “Hey, man…I said keep that away!”
“What’s wrong? You look hungry, Kuwabara…hows about a snack?” Yusuke took a step forward. Kuwabara blanched and took off running.
“No! No! I don’t want the demon strawberry!” Kuwabara yelled angrily as Yusuke chased him around the strawberry field.
Hiei sighed as he sat beside Kurama. “I never will understand why humans act the way they do.”
Kurama chuckled. “Embrace it as one of life’s mysteries, Hiei. Otherwise you’ll drive yourself mad wondering.”
Hiei didn’t respond, choosing to climb the tree instead.
Yusuke continued to chase Kuwabara around the field, completely oblivious to the tree root mere yards away. His foot came in contact with the root, causing him to trip and land with a spectacular thump in a pile of strawberries.
Kuwabara laughed. “Careful, Urameshi! You’ll rip your uniform!”
“Oh, stuff it, Kuwabara.” Yusuke snapped as he brushed himself off. “It was fun while it lasted.”
“Would you two fools mind coming over here before you lose the strawberry?” Hiei asked from his perch on the tree branch.
Yusuke and Kuwabara made their way to the tree and sat down, glaring at each other.
“Well, since you’re both here…I’d like to see the strawberry, to ensure that you didn’t damage it.”
“Sure thing, Kurama.” Yusuke reached inside his pocket in search of the demonic fruit. After a few seconds of searching, he went slightly pale.
“What is it, Yusuke?”
“There’s a hole in my pocket.”
Kurama and Kuwabara instantly turned a faint shade of white.
“Hah! And the fool screws up again…Just as I anticipated.”
“Cram it, Hiei! This is serious!” Yusuke ran off to the vast area of strawberries. “It has to be here somewhere…” He started sorting through the strawberries. When his teammates did nothing, he glared at them. “HELP!”
Hiei, Kurama, and Kuwabara ran over and joined Yusuke in going through the strawberries.
“This is pointless! It can be any of these!” Hiei said.
“You’re right.” Kuwabara mused. “If only we had someone who could just, you know…sense that kind of stuff.” The other three detectives immediately looked at him. “What?”
“You can do that, Kuwabara.”
“Oh. Right.” Kuwabara closed his eyes and focused. “I’ve got it! It’s over there!” He cried, pointing to the left.
“On the back of the truck?”
“Yeah. On top of the pile.”
The truck started and began to drive towards town. Yusuke’s jaw dropped.
“Dammit!” He yelled, taking off in a run. He was soon joined by the others.
“This is way too much trouble to go through for a strawberry!” Kuwabara panted as they ran after the truck.
The four managed to track the truck to a rural town, where a local market was being set up. Unfortunately, by the time they got there, the fruit booth was already set up and surrounded by customers.
Yusuke glanced over at Kuwabara. “Can you find it again?”
“One step ahead of you, Urameshi. It’s over there….In that chick’s purse.”
“Oh…fantastic.”
They slowly made their way over to the woman in question—a 19 year old girl who went by the name of Ren Takashi. Kurama smiled warmly at her as Yusuke and Kuwabara drew nearer.
“Can I…help you, sirs?” She asked, eyeing the two suspiciously.
“Look, lady, just give us that strawberry.” Yusuke said, holding out his hand.
“No! I paid good money for that strawberry!”She yelled, cradling the fruit to her chest like a small child.
“Lady, it’s a damn strawberry! Just hand it over!”
“NO!!”
Yusuke pinched his forehead. He had hoped it wouldn’t come to this. He was going to have to use force.
Kurama caught the look on Yusuke’s face. “Yusuke? What are you planning on—?”
Without warning, Yusuke pushed Ren to the ground and took the strawberry from her. She leapt to her feet.
“THIEF!!”
“Run guys!!” Yusuke yelled as he bolted down the road. Kuwabara followed soon after, with Hiei and Kurama right behind them. It took the townsfolk about three minutes before they started chasing after the four detectives.
“I’m not sure the Spirit World is going to approve of our methods!” Kurama objected, dodging a rock thrown by Ren Takashi.
“I don’t care! I’ve got the strawberry!”
---
By the time they returned to the strawberry field, a tall figure in a trench coat was waiting on them. Yusuke stopped a few feet before them, gasping for air.
“Hello. I’m here to receive the--“ They were cut off when the fruit smacked them in the face.
“Take that piece of evil and leave!!” Yusuke yelled. The figure shrugged and vanished with the strawberry.
Moments later, Botan floated down to Earth on her oar once more. She looked at them.
“I noticed an angry mob moving this way. Care to explain that?”
The four leapt on the oar. “We’ll explain later! Move Botan, move!!”
---
Yusuke strolled into Sarayashiki Junior High with his hands in his pockets. Thankfully, the assignment hadn’t taken as long as he had hoped, and he would hopefully have enough time to sneak back into class.
Now if I can just slip past Iwamoto I’ll—
His thoughts were interrupted when the final bell rang. He stood there, slack-jawed, with his hands in his pockets until he saw Keiko stalk past him.
He ran after her. “Hey, Keiko! I made it!”
Keiko paused and glared at him before continuing to walk. Yusuke hung his head.
Will I ever win?
