Does the original PSone memory cards have region lock?

I just recently bought a japanese memory card, without realizing it was japanese because there were english words inscribed in the front. When i placed it into my American PS2(its backwards compatible with PSone memory cards), the card was not picked up.:huh: Is it because it was region locked? Is there a way i can bypass it? Please help!:\
