DMC essay

AgentRedgrave

Legendary Devil Hunter
I was just reminded how a couple of years ago, shortly before DmC's release, a buddy of mine for his gamer group on facebook asked me to write an essay on the DMC series.

So, cause I have like no social life (In my defense, I was working in a camp at the time, so when I wasn't working, I was crashing in a small room), I sat down and wrote this entire essay scheming over the series.

What do you think guys? Did I do a good job?
Devil May Cry

(Warning, will contain spoilers)

Devil May Cry (Often abbreviated as DMC) is a series of four (soon 5 with the upcoming reboot DmC: Devil May Cry) hack and slash, beat 'em up video games with a modern dark fantasy and Gothic setting. The series was developed by Capcom and originally created by Hideki Kamiya. Although original intended to be a sequel to Capcom's Resident Evil franchise, The game was such a radical departure. That Capcom instead decided to make it a completely different game and made it about demons, and the original protagonist (a superhuman named Tony) was changed to the white haired, red trench-coat wearing, wise-cracking half-demon Dante. Dante is the half-human/half-demon son of a legendary demonic knight named Sparda, a demon who betrayed his own kind to protect mankind (while some say he died, others say he simply disappeared) as he hunts demons to avenge his mother's murder. The gameplay involves a lot of heavy combat scenes in which the player must attempt to extend long chains of attacks while avoiding damage in order to exhibit stylized combat; this along with the amount of time, and items collected and used are taken under consideration when grading the player's performance at the end of the level (called missions) the grade's are (from lowest to highest) D, C, B, A, and S. With each game adding new innovations. Dante uses a multitude of different weapons in the series. His signature weapons are his twin pistols Ebony and Ivory (the only weapon(s) to appear in all of the games, they like all other guns in the series never need to be reloaded) his heirloom broadsword Rebellion (a demonic sword left to him by his father, first appearing in Devil May Cry 2) and the Force Edge/Sparda (The sword that belonged to Sparda, and Dante's default weapon in the first game. As the Force Edge it is little more then an average broadsword. But in it's true form it can grant the wielder the power of Sparda himself. It is Dante's strongest weapon. Only useable in the first game, or as Trish in Devil May Cry 2 or Marvel vs Capcom 3) Dante also has an ability called Devil Trigger. That allows him to temporarily transform into a demon.

In Devil May Cry we're introduced Dante. A demon hunting mercenary as he's approached by a woman named Trish (later revealed to be a demon created in the image of Dante's late mother Eva. To lure Dante into a trap, but later joined him after he chose to save her live despite betraying him) to go to Mallet Island where it is said Mundus (the emperor of hell who Dante's father defeated two thousand years before the start of the series) has been regaining his power for the last twenty years (It is hinted, but never outright said. That it was Mundus who had Dante's mother killed) Dante travels to Mallet Island where along the way, he must fight a large number of demons on his way to Mundus. Such as Nelo Angelo (a demonic knight, revealed to actually be Dante's long lost twin brother Vergil) after which Dante gains Vergil's half of the perfect amulet (more info in the Devil May Cry 3 paragraph). Which allows the Force Edge to take on it's true form. Dante is able to seal Mundus (just like his father) and he and Trish escape as the Island collapses Devil May Cry received prominent coverage in the video game media, high overall scores from professional reviewers, praising the game's gameplay innovations, action, visuals, camera control, and Gothic ambiance. And has sold more than two million copies.

Devil May Cry 2 begins with Dante meeting Lucia, who invites him to Dumary Island. Where Dante learns from Lucia's mother Matier about a corrupted business man named Arius who's looking for the Arcana, items required revive Argosax (a demon who fought Sparda). Dante and Lucia each travel a different path to confront Arius. Along the way Lucia discovers she is actually an artificial demon created by Arius. After Lucia is captured, Dante takes the Arcana to Arius to trade for Lucia's life. Although Dante switched one of the items with a false coin. Argosax is still revived. Dante journey’s into the demon world to fight Argosax (despite knowing he might not be able to come back) while Lucia finishes off Arius. After the credits we see a scene of Lucia sitting at Devil May Cry (Dante's place of business in the series, as well as residents) where she hears a motor cycle from, outside and leaves to see who it is. We never see if it's Dante or not, and because Devil May Cry 2 was the last game to take place chronologically, to this day, we still don't know. Devil May Cry 2 introduced the ability to perform combination attacks in mid-air and an evasion button. It also introduced a weapon-change button, so the player could cycle through ranged weapons without switching to the inventory screen. Devil May Cry 2 also holds the distinction. Of being the first game in the series to have a playable character other then Dante. With Lucia being playable in the game's second disk. Also Trish is playable in a bonus section. Despite being highly anticipated, and a commercial success. Devil May Cry 2 was criticized for removing Dante's trash-talking personality and making him more serious and hardly speaking. As well as the game's significantly lowered difficulty and lack of any real strategy. And is widely considered the worst game of the series. With Gamespot calling Devil May Cry 2 “the most disappointing game of 2003”.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening takes place years before the original game. It opens with Dante sitting in his as-of-yet unnamed shop. When he is approached by Arkham arrives with an “invitation” from Dante's brother Vergil in the form of a brutal demon attack. After Dante kills the demons a giant tower called Temen-ni-gru (a portal to hell) Dante heads up the tower to fight Vergil. Encountering demons along the way, as well as Lady (a female demon hunter, who refuses to go by her birth name Mary, takes the name Lady. Since that's what Dante starts calling her, when she refuses to tell him her name, Later revealed to be Arkham's daughter, who she now seeks to kill because he sacrificed her mother to preform a ritual to gain demonic power, fights using acrobatic skills, guns, and a rocket launcher) Vergil has been trying to open a portal to hell to find the Force Edge to gain his father's power. But needed his brothers half of the perfect amulet (Originally the key to open the portal to the demon world within Temen-ni-gru. which Sparda gave Eva that she then split into two and gave each half to their sons Dante and Vergil on their eighth birthday, before her death). It is revealed that Arkham has been manipulating everyone from the beginning. As opening the portal required both halves of the amulet, Sparda's blood (Which flows in both Dante and Vergil's veins) and blood from a mortal priestess that Sparda sacrificed to close the portal (whom Lady is decedent from) Arkham intends to take the Force Edge, gain Sparda's power, and become a god. However even with the power of Sparda, he was still no match for Dante and Vergil at the same time, he was then dispatched by Lady. While Dante and Vergil fought over the Force Edge. Ultimately it was Dante who won. Vergil stayed behind in the demon world as the portal closed (taking his half of the amulet with him, in the secret ending it shows Vergil about to confront Mundus) Dante returns to the human world taking the Force Edge with him. He names his shop Devil May Cry after something Lady said to comfort him over the loss of his brother (“Maybe somewhere out there even a devil may cry, if he losses a loved one. Don't you think”) Devil May Cry 3 is famous for adding the Style System. Allowing the player to alter the gameplay to suit their playstyle, whether it be close-range (Sword-mater), long-range (Gunslinger), dodging (Trickster) or blocking/defense (Royal-guard). Each of the four basic styles gain experience points, which unlock more techniques and abilities without costing 'red orbs' (the common currency of the series) A second weapon-change button was added, allowing the player to cycle through Dante's Devil Arms (close range weapons). Despite some criticism for it's difficulty (largely due to the fact that the Japaneses version's normal mode, was the North American versions easy mode, and the Japaneses version's hard mode was the North American version's normal mode etc). Devil May Cry 3 was highly praised for staying true to the original, and is widely considered by fans to be the best game of the series (Yours truly included) The special edition, which rebalanced the difficulty (changing the difficulty's back to the original Japanese version. Jap Easy=NA Easy, Jap Norm=NA Norm) an added survival mode called "Bloody Palace" with a total of 9999 levels (although not all levels have to be fought). A new Jester (Arkham's disguise for when he appears to “guide” Dante) fight early in the game, with two optional fights later. A turbo mode for 20% faster gameplay. A continue system which can revive the character instantly, or allow the player to restart the fight they just lost as many times as they like. As well as allowing the player to play as Vergil. Was even more well received.

Devil May Cry 4 takes place years after Devil May Cry 3, but some time before Devil May Cry 2 (From what I hear, it's a year after the original, and that Lady is ten years older in DMC4 then she was in DMC3 (which would explain how she went up a few cup sizes lol, seriously have ya seen Lady in DMC4, she could put Laura Croft and Tifa Lockhart to shame lol)) the game stars a new main protagonist Nero, a young man who bears a strong resemblance to Dante and Vergil (White hair, blue eyes, similar facial features, and is later reveled to have some sort of blood connection to Sparda) and a member of the Holy Knights, a group of soldiers who serve the Order of the Sword a religious group that worships Sparda as a god in the castled town of Fortuna. Who are in the middle of their Festival of the Blade a celebration held in Sparda's honor. Where Sanctus the Order's leader (often refereed to “his/your holiness”) beings a sermon. Which is interrupted by Dante, who assassinates Sanctus in-front of everyone. Nero attempts to fight Dante. As Credo (the leader of the Holy Knights) leads the townspeople including Kyrie (Credo's younger sister, and Nero's love interest). With no one else in the room, the fight continues. The fight is brutal, with Dante being far more powerful then Nero. However Nero's demonic right arm (Called the Devil Bringer) activates (to the surprise of Dante) and allows Nero to come out on-top. However Dante (unfazed) reveals that the guards he killed were demons, then leaves. Credo orders Nero to pursue Dante. Along the way Nero faces a number of demons and after an encounter with Agnus (the order's chef alchemist) acquires the Yamato (Vergil's katana sword from DMC3) which allows him to use the Devil Trigger (although instead of transforming into a demon like Dante, Nero instead gains red eyes, a more demonic voice, and a blue spectral demon that fights alongside him welding Yamato, while Nero himself wields his sword the Red Queen) it is reveled that the order has preformed an “ascension ceremony” which they clam turns them into angels (but really is turning them into half-demons) and that Sanctus (who survived Dante's attack) has attended such a ceremony (as well as Agnus and Credo). Sanctus seeks to use the sword of Sparda (given to him by Trish under cover) to become all powerful as well as the Yamato to open the hell gate under the city. He also intended to use Dante as the core for a giant statue-like demon called “The Savior”. But decides to use Nero instead. He kidnaps Kyrie to lure Nero, and kills Credo when he tries to save them. With his dying breath Credo asks Dante to save Kyrie and Nero. Not wanting to deny someone their dying request, Dante agrees. Dante makes his way to Fortuna, killing several demons (including Agnus) and retrieving Yamato (which he then uses to destroy the Hell gate). Dante drives Yamato through the Savior's chest and awakens Nero. Who then fights Sanctus inside the giant (as Dante fights it on the outside) and wins, saving Kyrie. Nero and Kyrie escape the Savior. However Sanctus (not giving up yet) merges with the Savior, creating “The False Savior” which only ends up making it weaker. It is then quickly destroyed with Nero's Devil Bringer. Nero and Dante part ways with Dante intrusting Nero with the Yamato. Devil May Cry 4 brought one major innovation in the form of Nero's Devil Bringer arm, which gives players the ability to pull distant enemies in to be attacked, or smash them into the ground. Nero's sword the Red Queen can be "revved" up via a throttle handle, allowing players to precharge the sword for extra damage on the next hit, or with precise timing it can be charged after each attack, for extra damage and style. As Dante, players can now switch fighting styles in mid-combat. Dante was also made to be stronger and more agile then Nero to show the difference between a rookie and a veteran (also due to the fact that Dante would more then likely have become more powerful after the events of the first game). Devil May Cry 4 faced some criticizing for not being as good as DMC3, the story and some with decision to replace Dante as the protagonist, and when you do play as Dante you just backtrack what you've already done as Nero (which wasn't a problem for me, cause the first time around I was like “that woulda gone so much better if I was playing as Dante.” So I felt like that was the game's way of telling me to prove it). But overall had positive reception, parsing the gameplay and the visuals.

All in all, reception to the series has been positive. And has lead to the creation of a twelve episode anime (set between DMC and DMC4). Two novels, the first of which was intended to serve as Dante's origin story. But was declared non-canon due to contradictions with DMC3. The second lead up to the events of of Devil May Cry 2. Two volumes of a three part manga (the first centering around Dante, the second Vergil, and the third that was never published Lady (still known as Mary at the time)) set a year before DMC3. Dante had appeared in Viewtiful Joe (as a playable character) with Trish also appearing. Dante and Trish were playable in Marvel vs Capcom 3, with Vergil also being available in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

In conclusion, Dante's cool and cocky attitude, has caused him to become very popular among gamers. Ranking number seven on GameCrush's list of the “Top Ten Most Badass Video Game Characters”. And number 3 on ScrewAttack's list of “Top ten coolest video game characters”. GameRadar named him “Mister 2001” In 2012, GamesRadar ranked this "Cocky, sarcastic, and confident, half-demon hero" as the 28th "most memorable, influential, and badass" protagonist in games, commenting: "Whether it’s Chibi-Dante (remember Viewtiful Joe PS2?), fighting game Dante, or new-look Dante in DmC, he’s a guy who you’ll always have a hell of a time playing with.

It's good for a general overview for the series even though the last 2 paragraphs feel rushed.

Maybe you should include your thoughts on DMC if you do a rewrite?
