DMC can't be a button mash game

I've heard it from so many. That it's all practically a "button masher". 'Durr' I thought, 'they must've not even completed the game on the easy difficulty'.
But when some reviewing industries says it as well I'm starting to think... what is button mashing? Is it complex combos that must be done at high speed or is it mashing buttons and hope for the best?

Button mashing can mean two things. Doing extremely complicated moves in a very short time span or spamming one button and, as you said, hoping for the best.
