Devil may Cry Fashion Watch

"Plough the lilies"
The Internet raged when Ninja Theory revealed its younger, emo-fied version of Devil May Cry's demon-hunting protagonist. But is the new Dante really less chic than the old one – or any other character in the series? Join us as we rate the fashion sense of Devil May Cry's characters.
I'm not a huge Devil May Cry expert, but I am an expert at assessing video game characters. My stunning insight into the characters of The Witcher prepared gamers for CD Projekt Red's sequel, and my analysis of Soul Calibur's characters provided Namco Bandai with better backstories for Soul Calibur V (which they still haven't used, but whatever). Now I'm evaluating the fashion sense of Devil May Cry characters. Easy peasy.
newdante610.jpg

Name: (New) Dante
Analysis: I'm all for hating on characters, but I don't see a whole lot wrong with the new Dante. Granted, he might be a little skinny for a demon hunter – but he also has flaming Hulk fists. That makes up for looking like he could start his own boy band. I'd lose the Union Jack patch, though; it's more entitled hipster than half-demon vigilante.
Fashion Rating: Flaming Hulk hands are always fashionable.

olddante610.jpg

Name: (Old) Dante
Analysis:
So this is what fans miss, huh? First of all, cows don't wear this much leather. Dante's wearing leather chaps over what look like leather pants, a full-length leather coat, and leather gloves. His shirt looks like it might be leather too, and it's apparently being held on by three seat belts. Someone also needs to tell Dante that only cowboys wear oversized belt buckles, and I'm pretty sure they only wear them to prevent getting shot in the crotch.
Fashion Rating:
Dante's white hair gives him a distinguished look – which is immediately ruined by the gaudy Vegas rodeo getup. Also, no Hulk hands.

nero610.jpg

Name: Nero
Analysis:
What? How is this not Dante? All he did was trade his leather in for denim. White hair? Check. Giant sword? Check. Useless buckles? Check. He's even got a demon hand, for crying out loud. Is this one of those Clark Kent/Superman deals? Does Dante become Nero when he parts his hair on the other side of his head?
Fashion Rating:
Nero's fashion sense is just as bad as Dante – probably because he's clearly Dante.

oldvergil610.jpg

Name: (Old) Vergil
Analysis:
The old Vergil might be the most stylish male character of the Devil May Cry series. He's still wearing a lot of leather like his younger brother Dante, but he manages to make it look classy. His jacket even matches the color of his eyes; I'm guessing he's a real hit with the ladies. Unlike Dante – who's clearly overcompensating for something – Vergil uses a normal-sized, rather plain-looking sword. It still has super demon powers; Vergil just doesn't have to flaunt it.
Fashion Rating:
Still too many buckles and button flaps, but otherwise not bad.

newvergil610.jpg

Name: (New) Vergil
Analysis:
Forget Dante's makeover; Vergil fans are the ones who should be upset by his new look. He's gone completely overboard with his attempt to be fashionable. First off, his jacket appears to be made out of black velvet, which we all know should only be used for Elvis paintings. Second, what does a half-demon badass need a wallet chain for? I bet he doesn't even have a wallet, and if he does there's probably nothing in it. Third, the Joker called and wants his pants back.

Fashion Rating: You know you've gone too far when you're wearing powder blue women's gloves.

kat610.jpg

Name: Kat
Analysis: Kat is a new character in the upcoming Devil May Cry, and is described as having a "sweet innocence." This should be obvious by her ample cleavage, hand and face tattoos, and penchant for graffiti. Unless she's actively trying to look like a street urchin or convenience store robber, it's time for a new ensemble.
Fashion Rating: Kat needs to learn the difference between "good attention" and "bad attention." Zipping up her hoodie would be a good start.
kyrie610.jpg

Name: Kyrie
Analysis: Now this is how you pull off "sweet innocence." Kyrie looks less like a Devil May Cry character and more like a participant on Colonial House. Don't let her conservative demeanor fool you, however; Kyrie is Nero's lover, and still wants to get it on with him even after she sees his freaky demon arm. I'm guessing she has a wild streak, but her clothes are 100-percent classy.
Fashion Rating: I'm still in shock that Capcom designed such a normal-looking character.
lady610.jpg

Name: Lady
Analysis: Oh, okay. It all makes sense now; Kyrie must have been the first character Capcom created after Lady, who clearly used up all of the developer's nonsensical design ideas. Lady's attire even manages to overshadow the humungous, bayonet-equipped rocket launcher she's got. I guess this is what passes for business casual in the demon-hunting industry.
Fashion Rating: Put some clothes on, Lady!
trish610.jpg

Name: Trish
Analysis: Trish might not don the classiest of outfits, but at least she's coordinated. I still fail to understand how anyone in this series can hunt demons in these getups, though. Shouldn't they be wearing armor or something? How is she going to fight demonic monsters when she catches a cold? I'm sure the high-heel boots are really effective on the battlefield, too. Trish's style may work in an S&M club or biker bar, but unless you can kill a demon with cleavage, it's time to change things up.
Fashion Rating: Trish's wardrobe could use some color – not to mention cloth. Compared to Lady, however, Trish still looks like a nun.
lucia610.jpg

Name: Lucia
Analysis: Lucia is actually a demon, so maybe her midriff is protected by some magical demon spell. Aside from the lack of protection – which every demon hunter in Devil May Cry character is equally guilty of – Lucia is in good shape. I'm still not sold on her shawl, however. She's going to look a lot less elegant when a gust of wind blows that thing over her head.
Fashion Rating: Capes are for superheroes. If Lucia stitches hers into a full-length shirt, she'll be set.

Still think Dante's makeover is way off base? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!

That was really funny, and also completely true for every single one of them. I nearly choked at Nero's description, because that's how I've felt for YEARS.

"You know you've gone too far when you're wearing powder blue women's gloves"

I honestly laugh out loud of this statement. I mean his gloves looks like a glove of what an undertaker would use lol

And indeed. Flaming hulk hands > Swords and Guns :troll:

It feels like that the guy didn't like old Dantes clothes solely because of the leather, same with old Vergil which I find is very stylish.

But I gotta admit, I do like the new Vergils clothes too, feels like a modern version of old Vergil.

I thought the older Vergil looked like some weird pirate which is why I prefer the newer look actually.

There's nothing wrong with Dante's new look and I actually like his new coat better than his red one.
Seriously, Dante has a weird sense of fashion and if classic Dante would be in DmC he'd look like some dude who looks like he lost his way to an anime convention. Was Dante trying to see how many belts he could stick on that costume in 4? The union patch just makes sense for the punk look but it also just a nod to the british developers and it's not like it's a drastic deal breaker or anything.

Nero, that's what I always thought about that guy. When I first saw DMC 4 I actually thought Nero was Dante. What's the point of adding a new character no one cares about and make him look exactly like the older one. They should have just went with the obvious conclusion and take him out completely.

Trish totally looks like she's a part of some S&M club or basically a hooker. Plus remember when she decided to cosplay Lady Gaga, dafuq?

Also, Flaming Hulk Hands are freaking awesome and if you say any different then I think you need to re-access your standards of what's actually cool. IT'S MOTHERFUDGING FLAMING HULK HANDS!

Apparently, Nero is supposed to be like DmC dante during those times where capcom wants to introduce a new lead character to a newer audience.

I always liked Nero and newDantes design.
Vergil has a sleek no BS look which I liked. newVergil I don't mind either because it ties with the games theme.
Kat looks normal. Nothing really special. What you would find these days.
Trish looks OK too. More of a 'night out' type outfit. Nice boobs too.
I don't like Ladys DMC4 costume but I prefer it more than that schoolgirl BS. That was....I dunno just generic bad.
Dante look silly to me. I get Dante is older has matured into a fine cheese but his dressing ability sure didn't.
Lucia oh dear...wearing a pointless cape around your jaw DOES not make you look good. It's so....pointless. Borderline Square-enix designs now.

Hulk hands check
Light them on fire check
=freaking awesome

You're no fun if you don't think that's cool. I wonder if I can dig up those toy Hulk hands I bought a long time ago and turn them into that.
Actually, when you talk about flaming Hulk hands they actually remind me of Super Skrull(A combination of the Fantastic Fours powers) like here from MvC3.

I'm not into the whole comic scene so I don't find the Hulk hands that cool, even when on fire. If you like them, good for you. Doesn't mean I'm boring just because I don't like it. :/

Oh really? So a convenience store robber looks like that these days. I need to be more careful!

Just kidding. I don't want Dragonmaster to get angry to me.

DMC 2 dante wants to have a speak with you :P

Dante's look in DMC 2 was the stupidest look I've ever seen him have. What the hell was he wearing? It was a trenchcoat that was fused with a black vest.....that look was so dumb.
