5 was great and all but we never get the same spark 3 had. With Devil May Cry 3 we really see Dante and Virgil struggle as they are at odds with each others ideals. Not that ego boasting from 5 but how they are trying to get through to each other and yet somehow are there for each other as well. Somehow 5 comes just shy of getting the same vibe.
The Legacy of Kain games managed to pull it off. Perhaps the devs got some inspiration from that. But Devil May Cry is missing something. That something is lingering threats from past games. It makes it difficult to advance the story, because what past threats are even alive? It's causing the story to stagnate.
The only way I see this working is with Nero becoming a key figure halfway through in Devil Cry 6 with Dante and Virgil being the ones providing direction. Much like how Kain does with Raziel in Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver. There has to be contrast to make it work. Someone that has found their way (Dante and Virgil in this case) and someone still exploring/finding out (Nero).
Devil May Cry 6 could reintroduce the order. But on much more complicated terms. Fight a bit here. Work with them there. For complicated reasons.
This is a plot that can be spun a number of ways. The order and demons can fight each other. Except this time the demons make more of a point. Expose the hypocrisy of the order. When everyone is a monster which causes everyone to stop and pause. Anything could happen from there.
If Mundus is a threat (where's he going to go, hell?) then someone could have to replace him. What the end of DMC5 indicates is that the characters are going to hell. So it's possible DMC6 will follow that line of logic.
Half the game would be in hell with Dante and Virgil (first half). Nothing new yet. Player switches to Nero halfway. Earth. Dealing with the order. The demons make their points somehow with the order left in shock (for whatever reason). Then they all meet up in hell with complicated allegiances with a big war going on.
The final enemy being not a demon, not a god, but someone... underestimated. A threat that doesn't just kill, but infests. Infects. One by one the allies start to fall. But by who? Dante. Wounded. Virgil. Wounded. Nero. Wounded. Nico. Trish. Mary. Possibly even dead.
What if Morrison is pulling the strings? What if he's been secretly setting it all up? That would be a plot twist. Putting the key players at the key locations at the right time.
There's so many ways to spin the plot. Work in a plot twist somehow.
