Hi guys
Here at DMC.org we have very few issues with spammers that you guys will see thanks to the various plugins and mods that Steve has installed to keep the boards clean and spam-free.
However, from time to time people will slip through the net and there will be a thread or post which is just spam. This can be a load of links or perhaps a post made in a different language - sometimes it can be more unpleasant in the form of videos or images which are upsetting or obscene in some way.
When something of this nature does happen, the staff here would really appreciate your help in letting us know that a spam thread or post has occurred:
DO NOT REPLY TO THE SPAMMER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Spammers are not like forum trolls - they do not hang around to see if you are going to take the bait. They simply post and run. Most of the time they aren't even people but bots generated to flood places with spam. They will never read your reply nor will they care that you have said anything.
ALL YOU ARE DOING BY REPLYING IS MAKING THE THREAD MORE IMPORTANT THAN IT ACTUALLY IS AND ENCOURAGING OTHERS TO READ IT AND RESPOND.
All you need to do is ignore it and use the report function instead. This sends an instant email to all staff members to alert them of the spammer and then they can deal with it accordingly. If there is a staff member on the boards you can also send a PM to them, if that's easier and quicker for you.
Spammers will get through from time to time and you'd be surprised just how much spam we already have to get rid of which you guys don't see (and be grateful you don't...
) but at DMC.org we do all we can to ensure the majority of it is filtered out.
So please don't interact with spam threads or posts - report it and then ignore it. Save your witty putdowns for the trolls - much more satisfying
