Dante's Tattoo

The tattoo on Dante's back has always boggled me. I'm not sure whether it's a family crest or a symbol of some other worth since, for some reason, Assiel was holding it for Dante and Vergil supposedly has a different tattoo.

It was also in Sparda's portrait. A crest in his shield with different dimensions here and there but obviously the same one.

Yeah, I assumed that indicated it as a family crest until further inquiry had me wondering why it was placed in Assiel's hand and why Vergil supposedly has a different tattoo (but that's seemingly in concept art and I'm not sure if its canon to the game).
