Vergil: How much of your childhood do you remember?
Dante: Not much, had meningitis when I was 7, wiped my memory why?
V: They told me I suffered a car accident that resulted in total amnesia, age 7.

At age 7 Dante and Vergil lost their memory and were subsequently placed into orphanages, Vergil was adopted by a rich family, while Dante went through various institutions where he was abused.
Lots of fans speculate that Mundus wiped their memory so that the twins would never be able to harm him. Now that's just silly, if he knows that nephilim are the only beings that can kill a demon king, why would he not just kill them on the spot? This even goes against the fact that Mundus does not know Vergil exists, so how would he be able to wipe their memory in the first place?

I think that Sparda and Eva were the ones to wipe the memory of their sons in order to protect them from Mundus. After all, two seven year olds against a Demon King is not exactly in favor of the kids.
I propose that Sparda wiped their memory in hopes that one day, when they are older and more powerful, Dante and Vergil will remember who their are and go after Mundus.

But this is my theory, what do you guys think actually happened? I heard some people say that Dante and Vergil did it themselves, Phineas did it because he is their "caretaker", so to speak, and I even heard that Kat might have been the one to do it. Feel free to speculate and share rumors. Also gifs, lots of funny gifs :)

Interesting theory.

And it would make sense because no parent would want their seven year old child going after a powerful evil man for them. Erasing their memory was the least they could do in order to at least lengthen their lives a bit longer till Sparda could find a way out of imprisonment. However Sparda's late by 12 years or so, so now, Sparda is helping from beyond to make sure his sons, Dante and Vergil know how to kill a demon king.

But I also think Sparda could feel a bad feeling about Vergil and in turn kind of regrets wiping his memory since his powers developed quicker to a possible dangerous level and remembering such a traumatic death of his family could release that dangerous power and could wreck havoc on the world. While Dante was alright because he had a sleeping power within him that would one day release and protect the world.

These precautions also must have involved sealing his swords in them and they only coming out in the face of evil as a sort of fail safe in case they meet with demons at some point in their young lives.

But this is a theory though.

It is shown in the French comic about Vergil that Sparda spoke to Dante while he was in prison being beaten by demons. Told him about the sword Rebellion and that he could use it to defend himself.
So it is also possible that Sparda protected his sons with memory loss as well.

I agree it makes the most sense for it to have been Sparda and Eva so as to protect the boys (can't be killed for being Nephilim if they have no idea they're special), but then, who told them the lies about meningitis and the car accident? Vergil mentions a "they", presumably the same people who separated Dante and Vergil in the first place. Their parents were gone, so who would care enough to make up a reason, if not the very people who knew exactly what memories were missing and why?

There's also the question of how Vergil found the truth, and how Mundus discovered Dante was the son of Sparda if Dante didn't know it himself. It seems like there's an unseen hand manipulating events in a lot of this. Phineas seems like a likely culprit, since he's the only character with mysterious origins, but it's hard to say.

Take note of the usage of 'they'. I have a hunch that the angels wiped Dante and Vergil's memories, then hid them.
