Are they actually spiders?

Alittleacorn

Smile it confuses people
You know those little insects that scamper around the levels that you can kill, I know they look like spiders with the legs and people have referred to them as that [mostly because of the big spider in DMC1] but, are they actually spiders? Because spiders have 8 legs, not 4 from what I can tell these little guys have.

Has anyone seen an art piece or a clear screenshot of them to know? I need it for something I'm making and it's important I don't have a mix up.

here's a concept art of it it's called Critter

I love how we're speculating about the Critters. XD

I always thought that they were the larval form of the demons of Limbo. At least, the porcelain type demons. I can totally see this tiny little thing growing up into a badass Elite Stygian.

That's a good point. Are they some kind of baby demon?
I always figured seeing what happened with Mundus and his spawn that baby demons looked more like humans. But maybe it's because those two were in humans bodies that the spawn looked human.

Or maybe they are always like little spiders? Like Masri said, maybe they are cleaners? So they stay in that form forever as it is the best frm to scavenge.
The closest I can think of in the real world is like those little birds eating parasites from big elephants, or little fish cleaning other bigger sea creatures.
Maybe the spiders do that kind of job? They keep Limbo clean.

Hmm, never really thought about it, but I doubt that they are spiders, because if they were, shouldn't there be some kinda spiderwebs aswell?
I always figured they were just some very low demons, though I really like Darigion's interpretation of them being baby Stygians <3
It's a pity they didn't use that butterfly-ish looking version of them aswell :<

I should never have entered this thread. It triggered my arachnophobia. XD

It seems to me that people need something to talk about after all topics have been discussed to death, so now the more insignificant things are now getting into the spotlight.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not condemning anyone. I just find it interesting how the forum evolves. :P

They could be cleaners, but I'm gonna stick to my theory of them being baby Stygians. Or perhaps they go through a kind of phase-like system. From Critter, to Bathos, to Pathos, to Lesser Stygian, to Stygian, to Elite Stygian. Then from there, they branch off. Some become Witches, some become Dreamrunners, and some become Tyrants. Witches are stuck as they are, and Dreamrunners are as well, technically (Drekavac seems more like a commander than an evolved form), but the Tyrants can evolve one last time to become Butchers.

This is making me think of pokemon with all this evolving into other demons.
If that's the case, then what about Sparda, Mundus and Lilith? We never see their demons forms because they're in human bodies...but they reproduce like humans, not evolve, and their spawn looked human even without using a human vessel like Mundus does; so are they the exception?

I wonder if other demons keep those spider critters as pets?:P They seem like they could be kept as pets. They're pretty small.

I think it could be like demons have specific castes. The Stygians and more animalistic demons are like a worker caste, while sentient demons like Sparda, Mundus and Lilith fulfill a sort of Queen or King role.

They might. X3 I'd keep one, they're adorable.

Asking if a four legged demonic insect is a spider just because it shares similar features to them is like asking if a demon is human simply because it has the shape of one.

No, they are not spiders. They lack too many qualities, such as been eight legged, mandibles, two body segments, and more then two eyes. The only thing these things have in common with spiders is long legs and that is not enough.

Phantom, on the other hand is all arachnid, spider and scorpion, the two most famous arachnids.

I'd say they're more like scavengers, or similar to wolf spiders (they don't build webs). Maybe if you had enough in one place they'd actually attack like some animals will do. I just don't think they'll evolve into something else. Grow, probably. Evolve, no.

Off topic: This was the perfect time for a spider to show up in my room.
