From what I heard, Stan Lee speaking on the subject was actually due to the fact that the so-called "SJW Marvel" used him as a shield because their comic books have been pandering and terribly misguided. Some readers and youtube comic fans have called them out on this, and SJW Marvel decided to use Stan Lee for protection.

For those who aren't aware (or are aware) Marvel has been extremely PC or SJW as of late. But not the type of SJW that's actually for the justice of society, but instead making anyone who's white the "enemy", turning their people of color into stereotypical Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters,everyone is gay for no reason, and reducing great characters like Blade into baby sitters in Hawaiian shirts.
