Oh. Well, I usually do try to have my characters not be insanely overpowered. In fact I usually try to give them weaknesses. Though, that doesn't mean some characters are insanely overpowered for villainy's sake. To give my character something to strive for. Say the villain is insanely powerful, but my character manages to subvert that with intelligence and cunning instead of sheer strength.
You don't have to kill off a character for no reason, just have the crap beat out of them on a semi-regular basis. Take Zu for example. She's one of my strongest characters, but she isn't anymore powerful than a standard foot solider, she's just more skilled. So while she (usually) wins in the end each fight takes effort and she does get hit by the enemy.
And then there's Lightning. <3 She's a lot less emotional, so she rarely shows how much of a struggle a fight is, but she's beat up a good amount to. Garu...not so much. He's mainly the support guy that offers covering fire, so there hasn't been that many opportunities for him to get beat up. *something to work on ^^!!*
In a story I never even bothered to show, Xevnas got beat up to the point of having to retreat and/or collapsing several times. So I know how to f*ck up my characters. XD
