They're just my characters. I regard them more as tools. I can like them, but I've no connection to them.

What? If I felt close to my characters like they were my kids then I probably wouldn't be able to have bad stuff happen to them, or at least not without giving them something to make up for it. Even with that said I've no problem with putting Lightning through hell (as you've probably noticed).

I probably sound really horrible to you, though to me its just good writing.
