Angeal got it from his father who used almost all of their income to get the sword. It represented Angeal's family honor, that's why he almost never used it. Then when Zack got it, he used it only with the blunt side. When Cloud got it, he used the crap out of it and switched swords when he finds a better, then he let it rust on the cliff were Zack died...
