What if they made nero get possessed by them using the ascension ceremony on him. Then sanctus forces him to fight dante, who the player controls in the final fight.

I'd have it as the final fight of Dante's campaign but not the game.
for better or worse, 4 is Nero's story so the last boss should be his.
Ya that can work for both, mission 19 dante vs nero with player as dante. Dante knocks sense into nero and beats the possession out of him, then nero regains control of himself and fights sanctus as the end boss.
